LingQ 5 for Web launched!

Hi, i have a little problem. Since 5.0 launched, ive been getting email notifications for everything. The problem is i have email notifications turned off for everything right now so i don’t know why i’m still getting them. Maybe a bug? in the past 2 hours ive gotten over 40 email notifications from lingQ. can this be fixed? Thank you in advance

No, it’s not a bug. We made the decision to include status 4 words as these are words that aren’t completely known. It was decided that it was inconsistent behaviour to skip them since it didn’t allow a review/status change. We felt it made sense to only skip known words.
The system is not designed to keep your status 4 words, status 4 is a step in the learning sequence. You can see how many words you have learned in your statistics under Learned LingQs. Use the k shortcut to quickly move status 4 words to Known as you arrow. It should happen relatively quickly for you.
We recognize that it is a change in the way you have been working and apologize for that.

I DON’T LIKE LINGQ 5.0 TBH

There are a couple of moments regarding lesson translations:

  1. I had some lessons with translations, the translations seem to have disappeared in v5. In the Edit Lesson page, when I click Translations, there is just plain lesson text instead of a translation for each language and my old translation is gone

  2. How do translations in v5 work anyway? There is a button Translate Lesson - what language does it translate into? Is it the first language in my list of dictionary languages, the website interface language, or the native language from my profile? (upd: I’ve just checked, seems to be the interface language for whatever reason) Is there a way to change this language? If the translation for that language is not available, can I set which language(s) to fall back to? Will there be a way to see the entire list of available translations for the lesson?

First of all, I really like the new look and I feel this is a step in the right direction for the future, at least if it also makes seeing lessons easier and seeing recommendations for new lessons better.

At this time, though, there seems to be some issues that hopefully will get ironed out soon.

  • I had a lot of problems on Firefox (my preferred browser), so I switched to Chrome. Firefox, earlier today at least, was so buggy that I couldn’t use it. Chrome was stable enough for me that I could practice almost more or less as usual.

I only had 30 minutes this morning, and that is all the following is based off of on Chrome:

  • Sometimes pages were slow to load or refresh. Maybe it’s not the LingQ site and some other cause.

  • The ‘continue Studying ‘ section seemed to be slow to refresh, showing things I read yesterday but not showing what I read 15 minutes ago (what I wanted to quickly return to without searching for it).
    Update: This already seems to have improved. By the end of my 30 minutes, I could see my recent material.

  • The LingQs in dark mode are hard to see if you set them to ‘3’. Which is a part of how I use LingQ… I manually set everything to either ‘3’ or ‘known’ now. I don’t spend any time asking myself how well I know a word—it’s simply whether I know it well enough that I want the keyboard shortcuts to skip a word or phrase. Anyhow, that’s just me. It helps me stay focused and on task.
    Maybe they could still be a lighter shade of yellow on black instead of dark grey on black?
    For now, I guess I’ll use light mode even though I like the dark mode option the best.

  • Sometimes, the page becomes sluggish or unresponsive and I need to refresh. After a while eventually, sometimes things like the voice-to-text or keyboard shorts may stop working. Again, requiring a refresh…

Hi, I joined LingQ just one week ago. I was impressed by its rich interface. I did not find it cluttered. Lots of info, but very well arranged. The V5 Reader leaves empty space on the left, and the sidebar cramped, as others have commented. I see only one (sometimes zero) Popular Meanings for a new word, until I scroll. It does not show the Related Examples at all, which I liked to read to see the word used in other phrases.
This version looks like other vendor products I supported in IT that merged their Web and mobile apps so there would not be two codebase ‘flavors’ to suport. Even so, they preserved a ‘revert’ link. I wish LingQ had done that.
Suggestions: 1 . (for users) In Dark Mode, I chose Reader highlight of underline to bring back blue/yellow highlight, and I like the way it looks. (2) for LingQ: let the user hide the Dictionaries section of the sidebar, to allow more room for Popular Meanings.

I see the performance problems on Firefox are still present. Any estimates on when we will have them fixed?

Generally very happy with the new look and feel.

However, “Generate Audio” which used to work very well for my Greek audiobooks now doesn’t seem to work at all. I note that the lesson title now seems to be included as part of the text, but even when I allow for that the timings are all out.

It also doesn’t work for Japanese, but then it never did.

It still works fine for Chinese and Spanish.

You should be able to just click the green plus (which turns to a delete symbol) to remove courses and it is happening but there seems to be a glitch in the UI so it continues to show for a while even though it has been deleted. It should eventually stop showing. We are working on fixing this.
If you go to View All for Currently Studying, you can filter by Courses and manage your courses there.
What takes 2 clicks vs 1? Reading times can be manually added or subtracted on the Stats/Lesson Complete page.
Pages you spend time on are counted in your reading stats. If you skip them quickly, they aren’t counted. We are monitoring this and optimizing it and will continue to do so but it should be much more accurate for most users this way since most never used the manual counters.
Anyway, let’s keep using it for a while and see how it goes with real usage.

It sounds like you are on a low resolution monitor. It seems there are a lot of issues on this thread related to low resolution screens. That is an area we didn’t spend time on it seems. We will look at what we can do for all of you complaining about the sidebar being small and not showing enough information. On most monitors this is not the case.
Also, for all of you having issues with the sidebar being small, you may prefer closing the sidebar and using the whole window view with popups. This should show the translations better for you.

Well then as a customer I just have to give my input that this decision is really disappointing and it really ruins LingQ for me. It really doesn’t make sense from a logical or a practical standpoint. From LingQ’s support center:
“You may decide to increase the status of a LingQ to “4 - Learned” or “Known.” Clicking the checkmark will indicate that the word is Known. Both Learned Words and Known Words count towards your Known Word total.”

To me, Learned means you’ve learned the word. Past tense. And in fact, once you mark a word as learned, it becomes a known word and is added to your total! So I have no idea why someone would then want to move it from “Learned” to "Known, which does nothing.

And practically, maybe I’m the only one who uses LingQ this way, but when I’m reading I want to move quickly and jump from unknown word to unknown word using the arrow key, instead of clicking around with the mouse kind of like you have to on the Android App. And again, why would someone want to go through tons of words they’ve already learned?

The page turning issue is one we are trying to figure out. Likewise the intermittent failure of keyboard shortcuts. The shortcuts stop working when a specific action or actions are taken. We just need to figure out what that is. Any help would be appreciated.
We’ll look into the tts issue. Seems strange.

You should be able to refresh the Library on the Android app and see all lessons. You may be looking at a cached view until then.

Try refreshing, opening other lessons and the paging should eventually start working.

And I know it seems like a small thing, but over the course of hundreds of pages and thousands of words read it would make the process significantly longer. It’s just like the sidebar that many other users have mentioned. There’s now more clicks required to see/do everything now compared to V4. Which again, doesn’t seem too important until you multiple that effort and time by tens of thousands of words.

There will be an ability to generate the full audio tts soon so that the Listening Mode will be available for all lessons. For now, you can go to the Print screen to see the full text. Click Info pane in the … menu and then Print.
The fact is we can only build, design and maintain so many views of the text and this is how it will work from now on.

Thanks for the screenshot. It helps to see some of the issues on low resolution screens. We did not design our site to work on screens like yours. We will see what we can do.

It sounds like you are talking about the iOS app. It won’t work on old phones like yours. But, it should preserve the old app for you and like you say, the single language apps are still v4 for now.

Top right corner still has an import button and there is a separate import button on the Library page.

No problem! I hope I didn’t come off as too offstandish, since I truly do like LingQ and I want the web app to be the best it can, despite being a negative nancy about it.

The phone app works like a charm but I feel too clumsy working on touchscreen devices, which is why I’ve been so stubborn about the subject.

I don’t want to invalidate the work that the staff has put on this so far, since it would be too easy to dig my heels on the ground and take the stance of “since I’m paying I’m entitled to so and so,” which is childish.
