LingQ 5 for Web launched!

Can we still download mp3 files of our lessons? I can’t find the download button anymore…

OK so I see the download function was moved to another place…

It seems that way. I dropped Firefox entirely after realising the new LingQ works better on Chrome. Other than performance I don’t see any major difference.

So far it seems fairly awful, but we’ll see if it improves with usage. The old saying ‘When it is not necessary to change it is necessary not to change’ may be appropriate.

Hi. Where can I find place for importing and sharing lessons/courses?

Initial impression is good, a bit of getting used to the new interface as can be expected, but everything working fine for me so far! The karaoke feature is really nice!

This new version is a disaster.
Is there a way to use the last version?

Hm, is this an intended effect of LingQ’s “dark mode”? Every time I open a new page or scroll on a page (like this one), the page first turns white before switching back to dark.

I don’t know if this is the default behavior on all operating systems and all supported browsers (I’m using the latest Firefox version on Win 10). But this effect is so annoying that LingQ’s built-in dark mode is unusable for me.

OK, I´ll stick with my dark mode browser extension because it seems to be the far superior implementation…

Not sure how this happened, but the new reader seems to be broken for Arabic. It won’t let me click any words, making it impossible to look them up or create LingQs. I think it did work for me on an earlier version of V5? But since the reader was much slower than V4s reader, I didn’t test it a whole lot before.

For French it does seem to work, but it seems to be much slower than before.

I’m using FireFox on a Windows machine, if that’s of any help.

So are you saying this is a bug and it will be fixed by LingQ? And no, I have over 8K status words in German so I don’t think I’ll be going through and changing all those to √. Plus seeing how many words you’ve learned over time and how many you recognized at first sight is a statistic that should be preserved.

Hm, I can’t use the GUI as it is anymore with Firefox.

  • It seems that LingQ no longer works with Firefox.

  • Turning a page (in page view mode) is extremely sluggish.

  • It seems almost impossible to highlight and translate longer phrases/collocations (and that's bad, I mean "really bad").

  • Built-in dark mode with Firefox? Well, see my other posts in this thread.

I’m going to test it with Google Chrome now. If the user experience there is as bad as with Firefox, I´ll switch to another audio reader - at least for now. Sorry!

Google Chrome (latest release on Win 10):
Still sluggish, but highlighting phrases/collocations works a little better.

Unfortunately, my overall impression is that this is still a buggy beta version that should never have been officially launched.
Of course, this is also a psychological problem. The better solution is probably the Google way of a “quasi-eternal beta version” that very slowly becomes an established version.

I suspect that this wasn´tt possible due to the underlying software infrastructure. For now, though, regular users (like me) just seem to be beta testers for the official LingQ version 5.0. And that’s not a good thing, because our workflow is more or less ruined.

So I’m going to switch to another AudioReader. I´ll check LingQ v5.0 again in a few weeks.

Bye for now,

Peter

Hoping for a quick fix. My study routine just got messed up sadly.

LingQ stays the same in a sense. You either use it in the lack of better tools or not. The redesign isn’t much of a redesign, but re-skin, like skins for WinAmp. Notifications show only ONE notification in full-screen mode. Because of what, it’s better to show it in a fancy white pop-up with a lot of useless white space around?
Forum stays the same. You either tolerate unnecessary stiffed space down the popular discussions with unclear relations between comments and sub-coments or not. The whole ‘RECENT THREADS’ section just steals space when I’m inside the thread. If needed, I’ll go back to the community page and will be able to see recent threads
If you click upon your userpic, it’s not gonna get you to your profile page. Even if you click twice. It just opens and closes the same menu below the arrow next to it. So for what reason userpic performs the same behavior as the arrow does? Clickable userpics and usernames are the gold standart for many years on the Web.

Can someone point out on what is better now?

I find it unbearably slow using Firefox. Didn’t you want to fix it for the final release?
Also, using the keyboard only definitely works badly, too.
Sorry for my tone, but those issues were brought up during the beta. I was actually looking forward to the new version, but now, I find it unusable.

Hello, I’ve been using Lingq Beta for a long time and version 5 is really good. You brought so many features. Thank you very much.

Was gibt’s denn an Alternativen? Leider gibt es seit Jahren schon Probleme, mangels guter Alternativen bin ich bislang dabei geblieben.

Since the last version I have lot of difficulties, I lost the last update to my previous playlist, but the big problem is sometimes in the course, I can’t switch to the next slide, I must logout/login to resolve the issue. Another issue, is the interface for the translation, the vocabulary…
I find this last version less user-friendly, I’m so disappointed, I just extended my subscription for 6 months, and I really regret it, I hope you will do what is necessary to improve all this.

You never used Version 4 then? Pity, just hope all the miriad of issues will get solved.

I think that’s reasonable. It’s better to focus now on 5.0. Nonetheless I propose to just publish a short article where you communicate your upload plan for new languages (with some buffer to avoid delays). I think that would calm the community on this.

My complaints can be summed up in this image: https://i.imgur.com/96Ly7VG.png

I understand you guys worked hard to switch versions and that there will be some growing pains when it comes to the adjustments, but this isn’t just me complaining about the new version of the site, it’s a serious downgrade from the previous version. Maybe all the testing was done on newer, higher pixel count screens and newer, higher spec pcs?
I like to think that my laptop isn’t obsolete yet, but the speed is ludicrously slow.
