Updates to Web Beta as of Nov 1

Is there a way to create a lesson on a single page? Most of my lesson imports will be song lyrics and quote lists, so the lessons should always fit comfortably on a single page. Also, single sentences are not paragraphs, and I don’t understand why the generator reads them as such.

Also, is there a way to combine words? With Japanese, I’ve noticed that words don’t split very well and the reader sees multiple characters as two or more separate words when they’re actually supposed to be one single word.

Hi Eric,

Regarding your first comment - Are you suggesting the search bar at the top of the page isn’t obvious enough? I.e. that users don’t know they can start there to look up any one search term? Just making sure I’m understanding what you’re saying so we can use your feedback.

Hi gbonnema,

We can confirm there are only 17 lessons in that course. Are you sure you aren’t confusing it with another course? The name is generic enough.

Hi Tristan,

You can delete paragraph spacing by opening the edit lesson page for your lesson. To do so, hover over the 3 dots in the top right of your Reader and then select Edit Lesson. You will then see the lesson text, and you should see trash can icons that you can click on to remove paragraph spacing. Depending on the length of the lesson, you may be able to fit everything on to one page.

Those trashcans(the ones on top and bottom) only appear to remove the text, but there are no options to remove spacing; Only the option to add spacing above and below.

There is indeed a “remove paragraph spacing” option which can be used as long as more than one paragraph exists.

Ok, I found it. Thank you! Is there a way to avoid a lesson generating so many paragraphs? This one is almost 50. Can’t imagine doing this for every lesson. I’ve found one work around ーremoving all spacing from the textー But that’s also a it tedious and time consuming.

The course has about 50 lessons. Log on to the old system and see for yourself. The new system is wrong: it shows 17 lessons.

P.S. I did a search in the old system and found only this course which is imported by Tarmon, so it seems that the course really has 50 lessons. I have a screenshot, which unfortunately I cannot show here.

Until recently I could distinguish level 4 words from known words, because the level 4 had a dashed underline that I could see. Today, it appears the dashed underline is gone: maybe the color is the same as the background.

Is it possible to get the dashed underline back for the level 4 words?

You are right, the course does indeed have 50 lessons, but 33 of them were set to private by Tarmon. That is why those lessons are invisible in 5.0. Why they were set to private I have no idea - I will message the user and suggest they share them.

If you copy/paste the lyrics to create the lesson, you may want to reformat that text before putting it into LingQ. In the end, if the text is formatted as a series of individual lines, it will create a series of paragraphs.

Thank you, I would appreciate it. I also messaged him a while ago, but I don’t think he responded, not sure he is still active.

There is one question though: why could I import all lessons in the old tool, and use them in the new tool? You see I have worked on lessons way past 17 and am still working on those lessons with the new tool. I just cannot see them from the course.

So, this is weird all around.

I really hope tarmon responds: these lessons are invaluable!

Netflix and Lingq importer: español vs español de España

Last week I was able to import español ( Latin American subtitles ) from Netflix. Today when I selected español, subtitles from Spain were imported.
I am interested in Latin American Spanish. Please change this back.

Edit: It seems to be working again.

Hi nsprung, I may be confusing with a couple of issues.

I think my confusion on search bar was not realizing it is on the initial “lessons home” page and that’s where I could search across all lessons.

The underline seems to be showing fine. Are you sure the status is set correctly? Can you post some screenshots if this is the case?

thanks for the feedback. We are working to offer additional, more compact text settings. Give us some time. As for the news function, we will see if we can do that or offer it as a setting.

Thanks for the feedback!

  1. On the web, you can see the streak indicator in the navigation. If you click on it, it will show your streak status in a popup
  2. Possibly, but not likely any time soon. This is quite a big font already. Is it not big enough?
  3. We’ll have to see what can be done there. Thanks.

Overall, I like the new interface, and the new reader. A couple of critiques though:

When I search lessons, the sort by “New Words %” doesn’t work at all. Not sure if this has been mentioned yet.

I like the Reader, and I’m glad that I can click the scroll bar now. My main complaint here is that there is still no confirmation message to “complete lesson” when clicking the complete lesson button, and this still forces blue words to known. There should, at the very least, be a confirmation message for completing lessons if it’s going to force blue words to known. I personally would appreciate an option to never force blue words to known. The last thing I want is words in my Vocabulary that I don’t actually know. It literally breaks every other feature of the website.

I can’t say that I agree with LingQ’s philosophy about new words, at all:

“Blue words show you which words are new to you so you should not keep them around. Every time you see a blue word decide whether to LingQ it, make it known or ignore it and move on.”.

I would prefer to only LingQ words that I am already familiar with. Words that I know I hear or read frequently. This will change and shift over time as I master each word. That way I can focus my energy on a few words at a time, rather than having thousands of LingQs that will never get past “1” because I don’t even see them frequently enough. I don’t want LingQs for words that are unrecognizable, with no context, because that’s not how learning is done. For Japanese, it’s counter-productive because of their complex 3-Script writing system. The reader can’t even handle recognizing many of the words. Creating a LingQ for every single “blue word” in Japanese will have you with a Vocabulary full of broken and partial words that may not even have accurate definitions.

All in all, I am glad to see that 5.0 is here and that it’s different from the previous version. I hope to get a lot of use out of this site when things get cleaner and more intuitive.

Is it possible to make YouTube videos a little larger without having them cover the text in page view? I like to read the transcript in the language I’m learning (Italian) while having English subtitles playing on the video for reference if needed. I can read the subtitles but they are a little small.

  1. When importing audio files over 50 MB, I get the message: “Invalid audio file”. The files are MP3s and play fine on my computer. I can upload them fine using LingQ v4. Is there indeed a 50 MB limit when importing audio files using v5? Can this limit be removed or raised?
  2. When importing lessons with long text, LingQ imports only part of the text, and silently fails to import the rest. I only realized this because a “(1)” gets appended to the title of the lesson, implying that the text has been split into multiple numbered lessons. But the other lessons never appear, and so I’m left with only one lesson containing only part of the text. Please let me know if I can help troubleshoot this problem. (Note: when I import epub files, these get successfully split into multiple lessons. The above problem only occurs when I’m importing a lesson by directly pasting in text.)
