Nice! When trying to use the keyboard as much as possible (for paging), often, nothing happens and even using the mouse doesn’t help solve the problem. I can’t describe why it doesn’t work, though.
I’ll try the import fix you mentioned later this week.
With respect to spacing, I see there is indeed a change when I change the spacing. However, The final settings still don’t seem correct . I tried in both Chrome and firefox and changed some of the settings such as theme/font/spacing.
The space (maybe it’s more like a gap and not an actual space) between words became smaller, but it is still there. I’ve contrasted with the old lingq to be sure I’m not just seeing things… When trying to read a text, even if the space is smaller, it still throws me off seeing the clear space between the characters.
Take lingq mini story 1, line 7. (I used this line because it’s the clearest example of page 1 the first mini stori, but on all other lines you can also see this)
It should look like this: お客様はいろいろな国から来ます
But it doesn’t. There’s very clear spacing between the words that Lingq has parsed as individual words.
For me it’s usable, it’s far better than before. The problem is that the source is riddled with spaces so Lingq does a good job ignoring them. Otherwise the user would have to fix it by themselves, removing all the spaces which is not fun at all. A point of debate is the length of each line which is rather short but this has been mentioned before by many users.
I noticed that my last request has been heard, as there are now more options for line spacing incluing one below 1 (-> 0.85). Unfortuntely it seems this is broken for me (Firefox) as it’s not working at all. It doesn’t change at all, the spacing is always the same.
I hope there will be another round of optimizations. It has been improved but still feels slower than the old version. Also opening a course in the “continue studying” part with 70+ lessons took 10+ seconds for the list of lessons to appear.
May I ask what is meant by the word “LEGACY” that appears in the upper right of the screen when reading lessons? The word only appears when the hint/dictionary panel is attached to the right side of the screen (rather than set to automatically pop up over the word). It is mildly distracting. (Also I worry it may be telling me that having this panel attached is somehow a legacy mode, which in future will be deprecated in favor of the pop-up panel. This would be a serious disappointment…)
Yes, that is the case it seems. We’ll see if we can improve upon that. Obviously transliteration also seems to cause more spacing if it extends past the word boundaries too.
Legacy tells you that the lesson is still a v4 lesson. To convert it to v5, you should edit it, if you have that ability, and then convert it when prompted. the conversion is a back end conversion and really won’t affect the display on the front end much. It has nothing to do with the sidebar. At some point, we will convert all lessons to v5.
Okay, thanks, this is really good to hear! I only made the connection to the sidebar because the “LEGACY” label appears only when the sidebar is showing … that’s a bit strange, isn’t it? Also, if a lesson’s legacy status doesn’t mean much on the front end, perhaps it is not worth displaying the “LEGACY” label so prominently? Perhaps you could hide it somewhere, like under Lesson Info? Just a thought. I guess if all lessons will eventually be converted to v5 format, it doesn’t much matter. Anyway, thanks again.
I’ve noticed that there is a TON of content that I’m not sure is accessible based on my poking around. I’m assuming this is across all platforms but I mostly did my search using the web.
For example, one of our most prolific contributors of content, who has created dozens of courses, evgueny40…I can’t find hardly any of his content. I know it’s there, because on the courses I’ve used before they are in my list. If I go to the German open forum, he has them in various posts, and I can access them. Another is “veral”. There are a handful of others too.

I tried searching in the various categories, but couldn’t find many of them. I don’t think most of them would be found unless they popped up in Trending if someone went through them.
Granted, I’m not sure in some cases I could find these in the old website easily either. Usually I’d try to look for stuff through the popular lesson feed and would come across these. Although I thought a few of them were under the old “guided courses”. I know evgueny has a grammar course he created…but it doesn’t appear under the “grammar” section. Not sure how the sections are getting created (tags?)…so maybe if it’s not tagged a certain way they don’t show. But maybe a special section for tutors or real content creators is needed? And the “curator” (our librarians or whatever they were being called) should be tagging these appropriately? I was able to find the course via a search for “grammar”, but why then wouldn’t it simply appear in the “grammar” section?
In any event, these courses are great stuff, and real contributors should be highlighted in some way. By “real”, I mean those that have actually CREATED content, and not just imported a youtube video.
evgueny40 does a great job of promoting is content in the German forum whenever he posts something new, but if we wasn’t doing that, would these simply get buried underneath the huge list of newly imported items?
I also didn’t see a section that has EVERYTHING…unless one would simply go under Trending?
I just noticed a small error. From within a lesson, if you go to the menu in the top right (the three dots), the lesson number is incorrect. For example, in the mini stories, if I’m on story 3 (which is also the 3rd lesson in the course), the menu in the top right says “4/60” instead of “3/60”.
Thanks for the feedback. As we move to our new version, with our list of shelves and a greater emphasis on external content, we certainly have a lot to think about when it comes to making sure good content is easily visible for our users.
Lessons and Courses not showing up in the appropriate shelf is something we are investigating and will of course fix quite soon. That certainly isn’t a desired feature. If you are looking for an everything shelf (as you mentioned in your last paragraph) you could search for a particular term via the search function at the top of the page. A library like Russian or German has thousands and thousands of lesson, so there really isn’t a better way to organize and show each type of content.
You mentioned you want good content (i.e. Evgueny’s content, or other lessons produced by actual teachers) to be more prominently featured. We fully agree with this and are looking to refine the way we choose which lessons show up on top. Right now we think users should see a variety of content, so we shuffle around the shelves to show different lessons. We could adjust this to weigh more heavily towards lessons with many likes or completions, but wouldn’t want only the most popular lessons to show up. That would hide new, potentially good lessons that no one has had a chance to learn with yet.
We also have a shelf called “Guided Courses”. This shelf is meant to show the best courses at each of the six levels. Some of Evgueny’s material could easily be popular enough to make that shelf, providing it with a lot of visibility.
I learned a lot of Russian reading Evgueny’s diary when I first started with LingQ. It helped me a low, and I grew quite attached to his voice and his prose. I think our Russians users benefit greatly from his lessons but should also see more of other types of content - Netflix episodes, YouTube videos of all types, podcasts, and other native lessons. Our goal is for users to learn with the content they want to learn with, so we are looking to provide a balanced approach to our library that frees our users as much as possible.
Let us know what you think about this - We are certainly open to any ideas you might have.
Hi nsprung. Thank you for the feedback on my feedback =). I totally agree that you wouldn’t want to not highlight new content as it comes up. That to me is what the “trending” would be. Or the “What’s new”.
In the search I can do a search for most liked lessons/courses, I think it’s just not clear which section I would go to to start that search from? That will ensure I get it searching on the full list of courses when I do that sort. It’s also not easy for a newbie to LingQ to try and find something like evgueny’s content. I think for sure all of his courses should be in the “guided courses” section, but aren’t (not sure what criteria that takes to get there). Then again, he has some courses, that aren’t exactly “course-like”…but perhaps small lessons on various topics simply to be consumed…but it’s great organized content that seems like it should be highlighted in some fashion. “veral” as well has her “Daily diary” and other courses like that. That’s why I was thinking maybe a section for tutors and/or signficant contributors.
You also made a good point I forgot to mention is that evgueny has content in Russian, German, and English. All great stuff that I think all LingQ users, and new LingQ users who are looking for something more organized would greatly appreciate having “highlighted” in some manner.
