How do you regenerate a lesson, and what does this accomplish?
You can find the regenerate option in the lesson editing but I don’t have any clue of what it does either…
On the editor
First, I want to say that I am pleasantly surprised by the changes to the notes section and the use of . It saves me time and effort. Thank you!
Secondly, I want to add some things. Someone might already be working on it, but I cannot know that. For now just my observations and suggestions.
What works well :
- Using to get to the definition field (unless it is new).
- Using to get to the definition field (unless it exists).
- Using from definition to notes and out of notes and subsequently being able to use the shortcuts (b, d, s, a).
- the drop down box is gone! I am really glad to be able to see my notes while browsing existing words: thank you!
I am very happy because these changes enable me to focus on my word analysis in stead of on the tool. Less grabbing of mouse in between.
What does not work well, yet:
- Using to get to the definition field if it is new. That would help me focus on what I am doing, not on how I am doing it : vs . My suggestion is to allow both and for existing and new definitions.
- Opening a new page un-focusses any word on the page. Shortcuts don’t work. This makes me grab my mouse again, to focus a word … An interruption I really don’t need. My suggestion is: focus a word on opening a page.
- Paging back and forth (shift arrow) un-focusses any word on the page. Shortcuts don’t work. This makes me grab my mouse again, just to focus a word, so I can start using the program, again. My suggestion is focus a word when paging back and forth.
- When I press enter after finishing my notes, nothing happens. In order for a new line to appear I need and in order to get out of the notes section I need (like in definition). My suggestion is to have do the same as (like in definition) in stead of nothing.
I want to stress that enabling the keyboard this way is really helping and I want to thank you for the efforts so far: thank you!
- On iOS, under Settings → Reader → General, there are two options that are missing from the similar section of settings on the web. These are: “Auto Grammar Tagging” and “Add completed lessons to playlist”. For consistency, these should probably be added to the web version, right?
- On the old LingQ for Web, there was an option “Review LingQs when paging” that is missing from the new LingQ. Will this option return?
- For Korean at least, the “guided courses” section is empty on the new LingQ. (I still see it when I log into the old LingQ.) Will this be re-filled eventually? If so, will there be a way to suggest courses to include?
- The yellow help/chat icon in the lower right is the brightest thing on my screen in dark mode, and it covers up some features such as the flashcard button when in reader mode. I will never use this button, and imagine the same is true of most experienced users. And anyway, help is just one extra click away through the profile button. Perhaps let users hide this help/chat icon if desired?
- Using arrow keys to navigate to the next or previous shaded word works well unless the very first word of a lesson is highlighted, in which case it seems impossible to navigate backward to that word using the arrow keys.
- Progress bar at top of lesson: what I miss from v4 is that there is no way to tell what portions of the text I already know (ie, have no blue words). In v4, this was indicated by the portion of the line that is green (indicating progress toward known), which had a distinct function from the location of the dot (indicating location in text). In v5, these two interface elements (portion of the line that is green, and location of dot) have now collapsed into one (ie, the green line always extends exactly to the dot). Consequently we have lost the ability to see progress toward known, as distinct from location in text. Please let me know if my description of this problem is unclear so that I can explain in more detail what function is missing.
- In the Challenges section, my rank as listed in “Targets” column on right rarely matches my rank as listed in “Leaderboard” section on left. Is this an error, or am I misunderstanding what these different sections mean?
I don’t see the option to regenerate a lesson anywhere. What is the editor? Are you talking about the screen that comes up when you choose to Import a lesson/Edit a lesson?
Yeah, exactly Imgur: The magic of the Internet
I clicked on it once but it didn’t really do anything so I’m as confused as you are
Woah! My interface doesn’t look anything like that! I must still be in the old version! Also, I clicked the link in the email and it keeps telling me I’m in Beta, but nothing has changed.
Any chance of getting two buttons (slower and faster) for the playback speed? So you don’t have go all the way through all of the options, if you accidentally hit the faster speed button? ![]()
Have you tried logging in through beta.lingq.com?
That did the trick, thank you!
Hi,
I think that new LingQ version has been much improved. Bugs have been fixed, some useful functions are added, and texts are easy to edit (the function of “Regenerate of the lesson”). Thank you. I want to say two small things. which may be related only to me.
First, in the new beta version, one page shown on my screen is small compared to that in the previous version, as I said earlier. Both the main text in the left & middle and the vocabularies in the right. I adjusted the font size, spacing in the “リーダーの設定”, or the setting in the Chrome such as ズーム, but I couldn’t enlarge one page. In the previous version, one page is larger. There is sometimes a scroll bar between the main text and the vocabulary in the previous one.
Second, in the news field. Just my hope. It would be good for me if articles would be imported not by one click but by two clicks, just like in the smartphone (i-phone). The website only pops up at first, and then we can import it with one more click. Then I can check the news. The function of the news feed in the previous version of the PC is not different (yet we can see the content of the news by the right click), but personally I prefer the smartphone version.
When in edit lesson, the function for “change course” does not seem to work. I can do it, and it looks like it does work, including the signal “saved”, but when I return to the main menu, it is back at “quick imports”. The lesson I am talking about is the radio news broadcast of yesterday in simple Finnish (6-11-2021).
Did something change in this module?
EDIT: apparantly it only does not work for this specific lesson. The newer one (for today) I had no issue changing course. For the 6-11 one it still does not work.
When I open the course “Learn Finnish 1” the window says there are only 17 lessons and shows only 17 lessons. I know this course has about 50 lessons. Is this a bug?
The regenerate lesson button enables a lesson to be re-split and timestamps regenerated if you want to make or have made significant changes to it. After clicking the button, the original text input field is shown and you can make whatever changes you like before clicking to save and re-generate sentences and timestamps.
Thanks, we’re working on it still
- We are removing those options so they should actually be removed from the iOS app
- No, you can use the Review Page option now if you want to review the page. The other option was too distracting and felt mandatory
- Should be filled. We’ll check that
- We’ll see what we can do there
- We still need a good solution here
- Yes, this needs work still
- Thanks, we’ll take a look
I would like to give feed back on a couple of issues I’ve seen using LingQ via the Chrome web browser on a Mac.
- While doing a lesson, there is no indication how many LingQs you have created today or how many are remaining in order to continue your streak. I have to basically return to the home screen just to see my “Daily LingQs Goal” number. Could this be added to the lessons screen?
- On the lessons page, you can change the font type and size via the Reader Settings. But there is no way to change the size of the Full Text screen when it is shown. Is that something that could be added in the future? I.e., change the text size of the Full Text reader?
- When creating LingQs for Hebrew (and this maybe true for other languages too) special characters are ignored, for example, the dash in the word “בת-שבע”. If you create a LingQ for it, the dash is dropped and you get “בת שבע” – (no dash, just a space). These are completely different words (the first is a female name and second means “I am seven years old”). The dash is important and must be kept! Another example is “שׁ״ח”. The double quote (or two single quotes) between the letters implies that the word is an abbreviation. But when a LingQ is created, you get “ש ח” instead – (no quote mark, just a space).
Thanks!
We’ll think about that but we’ll see how it goes like this for now
Thanks we’ll take a look
For some reason during the word analysis, the back-arrow no longer works. It worked most of the day, but when I started reading this evening it no longer worked. It is now 10:47 MET (Paris/Amsterdam) and I experienced this since the beginning of the evening.
Did some change for the reader go through?
EDIT: today (8th Nov 2021) this seems resolved.
