Updates make Android app borderline unusable

Sorry, i missed that when updating the colors in dark mode. Will get it fixed right away. Translations should be working with or without contextual meanings.

I dont want for anyone to have their daily reading disrupted by a series of bad updates. Although the app is not perfect, these issues have not been a regular ocurrence and, in my opinion, there is no reason to believe they will keep repeating in future releases. I wont share details about internal processes but sometimes mistakes are made and in this case I, as the lead Android developer, take full responsibility for. This update had a ton of rewrites done all over the app, that definitely needed more testing. At the moment I can only do my best to respond to feedback and quickly push out releases. I wont ask for more of your patience but I do ask to everyone here who has had issues to help me to make this right.

Thank you, Tiago, for your response!

I’ve noticed a particular glitch when I click on a word and the definition box opens on the right side of the page. Specifically, when I attempt to scroll down through the list of definitions, it doesn’t scroll smoothly; instead, it repeatedly jumps back to the very top of the list.

Furthermore, to view additional definitions, I’m required to click on ā€œsee more definitions.ā€ It would be significantly more user-friendly to have these definitions appear in an endless, continuously scrollable list, similar to how it functions on the web version.

Another point I’ve observed is that the definition box on the right side disappears entirely whenever I choose a new definition for a new blue word. This wasn’t the case previously, and I believe it would be much more convenient if the definition box remained consistently available on the right side of the page.

Lastly, I fully agree with the previously mentioned issues: the green words categorized as number 3 or 4 are indeed very difficult to distinguish from the background.

This is on the tablet version right? Will look into all of this. Please let me know if version 6.0.2 improved on the status 3 and 4 green highlight. Thanks for the feedback.

You’re absolutely right, the issue I’m describing is occurring on the tablet version.

I’m happy to note that with version 6.0.2, the contrast is indeed much easier to see, and I really appreciate that improvement! With the next version, I’m particularly looking forward to seeing how the scrolling issue within the definitions is resolved. Thank you for taking that into consideration.

I also have another point I’d like to bring up: I appreciate that the definitions now have larger letters, making them easier to read. However, I’ve noticed that when we select a definition, the text (the created or chosen definition) isn’t spread out enough.

This means if a definition contains many words, we have to scroll down within that individual definition to see the entire content, making it look like it is a very narrow column. Considering there’s still ample space on both the right and left sides of the definition box, it would be much better to spread out the words and letters more horizontally. I hope that makes sense.

Furthermore, I’ve observed that when scrolling through the numerous definitions, longer definitions are not fully displayed; they are cut off, making each definition appear on a single line.

This isn’t very user-friendly, as I often scroll through to find the most comprehensive definition, and it’s much more helpful to see the entirety of a definition that another user has previously written to make the most logical choice for myself.

I’ve tried to be as detailed as possible, and I hope this feedback proves useful. Thanks!

In 6.0.2:

Under standard and underlining highlight mode, the issues I reported seem addressed. Additionally the click to edit is working again. This is awesome and I’m back up and running from this!

Under ā€œforeground colorā€ mode I see a bug where phrase lingqs continue to be highlighted even if they are ā€œknownā€. This does not occur under the other two modes and it does not occur with individual words.

One ideas for future large reactor/rewrite type changes would be to announce an open beta ahead of time via Set up an open, closed, or internal test - Play Console Help

Knowing the lingq community, I’m sure many would be happy (and really prefer) to try out a beta release, give feedback, and be able to revert to the prod release.

Keep in mind, the lingq learning method encourages a daily routine (and even has the concept of a streak). This change actively prevented me from maintaining a 2yr streak, requiring alternative methods like going to the website.

It’s actually been this way for many years with foreground color (2 major versions - 4, 5 and now 6). Personally, I like it, as it clues you in on phrases that really are important. Even if I’ve marked it known it seems helpful to me. Obviously I could leave these unknown forever too so it wouldn’t be the end of the world if taken away.

I have noticed similar things. Most frustrating being dark mode completely blocking blue words lol. As well as if theres a blue word right near the bottom of the page then the translation popup menu is mostly cut off.

Ah fair enough. I never noticed because I had been using only the default until this debacle.

The experience of adding and editing definitions is still a downgrade compared to before the update. I have two things to point out.

  1. If I click on a new word, swipe up, and add a definition, then I need to press the return key on my keyboard to save it. If I swipe back, then my definition doesn’t save. However, if I open a word that I have already created a definition for and I want to edit that definition, I need to make my edits and then swipe back to save…pressing return creates a new line in the box this time. I find this quite annoying since I do both of these things frequently and am always getting it wrong which makes the experience clunky.

  2. Double tapping a word in a definition no longer selects the whole word (as it usually does on any other text editing interface on android).

Pardon me for jumping to the end of the thread without reading most of the discussion, but I just have to say this:

What the actual hell? Is this a late April Fools joke? Roll back this change IMMEDIATELY! I am paying for this! Why are all the pop-ups off screen, why are all the buttons tiny, why is the screen so cluttered???

Since the lingQs are not working on LingQ, in the end I just switched settings to ā€œpaging move to knownā€ and for highlights i set to none or underline so i can read the text at least. In this way it is almost like a normal ebook reader where everything is known unless I mark it or look up meaning. I think I am starting to enjoy reading in this way actually.

I think maybe LingQ could have another highlight option with only the words changing color without the box. I think the box messes things up with contrast against the word. This will also be good for people who only care about 2 levels, known and unknown we don’t care about level 2,3 and 4. So the range of color is not important.

Are you on the most recent one, version 6.0.3? It seems to have resolved all of the glaring problems I was having.

As of now, I only have 6.0.0 available to me. I expect the newest version will become available soon (I have to sideload, because I am using an Onyx Boox Tablet that’s not officially supported).

I have new manually downgraded back to 5.7.19, and I must admit I am hesitant to trust the overhauled new version again so soon… (The layout also seemed particularly bad for an e-ink screen, although I admit I didn’t give it too much of a try before being repulsed and downgrading.)

I understand that the LingQ team is excited to improve the app, but I respectfully disagree that keeping core functionalities of the service broken in favor of having ā€œextraā€ features like the AI chatbot out early is the best decision here.

That seems to be the whole problem with Linq. The developers are using it as their own little science project, playing with every new toy and then moving on to the next new thing before finishing what they started. It looks like they’re more interested in padding their resumes than delivering a working product.

Well, I decided to give 6.0.3 a try now that it became available. Some of the problems are fixed. One strong irritant that remains is the colored background. Why can’t I have a white background? Why can’t I at least choose? It may not make too much of a difference on a normal phone or tablet, but for e-ink it makes the entire page look muddy!

Let me choose a white background, please.

(And yes, give me back my blue and yellow! Green and blue are unreasonably hard to distinguish on my screen.)

Hello everyone, joining the complaint line. The update indeed makes it harder to use the app. When it comes to the colors, especially green and red, please think about visually imparied people. Green and red are the most sensitive colors, some simply cannot or hardly see them. The dark background with yellow font/ highlight is one of the easiest to read even for people who have visual impairment.

I deleted the app ages ago due to no shortcuts. Lynx AI doesn’t do anything on the web.

Most, if not all, issues are fixed a few days after the update was first released and I’m actively working on the color options. You know nothing about the devs or myself so please refrain from talking about things that have nothing to do with the app itself. I do appreciate all the suggestions and feedback, but I will close this topic now.
