Please fix the mess related to "tags" in V.5.0

The more tags a user creates, the more cluttered it gets. It also becomes harder to navigate them.

Please implement this for V.5.0:

  1. a user should be able to remove a “tag” entirely (not from a single word, but the whole tag including all words connected to it)

  2. when entering a letter to find a tag (e.g. “e”, the sorting of the listed tags seems arbitrary (see picture). It is neither alphabetical, nor is the most recently used tag at the top. Both options would be highly desirable (personal preference would be the most recently used one being the first to appear)

Yes, yes yes.

I would love to have a better tag management as I can’t use them.

For some reason there was a sort of autotagging enabled and I can’t reset and deleted them without clicking every word in it.

  1. I would add also the possibility to see all tags we have, like we have lists of all words, to have lists of All Tags, so that we can quickly see what we have created and click on them to review tag lists.

  2. I would love a RESET button to start from scratch.

  1. Allow users to turn ALL automatically created tags OFF.
  2. Allow users to edit/manage their own tags.

Thanks for your feedback!
We are going to add back an option in the settings to disable “Auto tags”, that’s be available after the upcoming updates.
We will also continue looking into improving the tags system and see what improvements we can make.

@Jan - Re: point 1, you want to delete a tag and have it delete all words tagged with that tag? Or, you just want to remove the tag from all those words?
Over time, we will hopefully be able to favour commonly used tags. I will add that to our wishlist.

@mark: tags could be very useful and I’d like to use them but it’s just impossible.

The vocabulary it’s full of words already autotagged and we can’t delete them because we have to click in each word and delete tag by tag inside each word.

So @Jan is asking a feature (point 1), like in ANKI for example, where you can see all tags and you can just click in one tag and delete it. So that tag won’t exist anymore and it’ll be delete in any word already associated.

It would be very useful to have another page in the vocabulary with the list of tags we have already. For example, ALL, TAGS, PHRASES. Something like that. We click on the tag we want to, we review the list, or we delete the tag, and so on.

I mean, tags could really be useful but it’s very difficult to use them. You already have the database, it’s just a question of displaying in a different way and delete. Imho.

Yes, please, auto tag is killing the use of tags for who would like to have only 10 or 20.

Can’t you add a reset button? So that we can delete everything? Or can you do it on your side for example?

Thanks.

Why is autotagging such a negative? Is it because in German there are so many possible root verb tags? Is it because you would like your own tags to appear first in the list of tags?

Some kind of way to manage tags and batch add/delete would be nice and is something we will look towards adding in the future thanks.

I don’t see having a Tags tab since you can filter by tags now on any tab.

The problem is that I’d like to use only my own tags and not having imposed hundreds of automatic tags. I like to keep my own library clean and so I’d like to keep my tags clean as well.

And when I create a LingQ and I want to add a tag, I would only have displayed my own tags to enter and not hundreds of other possible combinations that I don’t use.

Filtering is one option and it could be useful. As @Jan said, the sorting is quite arbitrary but the point is another one.

In SEO, for example, you organize very well for categories and tags, which are specific concept and not random words. Then you click for category or tag and you have all your list of articles.

If I use 10, 20 or 30 tags I have to write them down in another paper to remember them and to remember the type of organization I’ve created. If I have a page that instantly show me the tags I have, I can easily see what I’ve been doing. And I can easily click and review the tag that inspire me that day. It’s an overview like in every blog in this world.

I have tag issue with 5.0 on the IPhone IOS 15.3.1. On the desktop if I want to remove an individual tag from a record I scroll over to the tag, a tiny x appears, I click on the x and the tag is removed. But this does not seem to work on the IPhone. No x appears, and even dragging the tag away from the tag bar has no effect. How can I remove the erroneous tag from the record when using the IPhone?

No, can’t do it on my end. We will see how to deal with it in the upcoming updates, it’s something we plan on improving.

@Mark: definitely the former.
I have lots of tags, I no longer use. There are also plenty of tags that “exist”, because I was trying to assign a tag and Lingq was not responding (= not showing the list of tags), but it created a tag anyway (see pic for explanation): e.g. I wanted to tag a word with “impterms-100.4” and entered “i” or “imp” or “im” and Lingq was doing nothing, but later on I see that it added these (“i” or “imp” or “im”) as new tags. (same with the tag “idioms” and “id”…). The list of tags gets more and more cluttered. Pic: tags hosted at ImgBB — ImgBB

That is the option that we need. Many of us have fixed the tags on individual records to our preferences. We would hate to see an option that wipes those out as well.

Don’t faff around trying to declutter your tags by deleting tags from individual lingqs one at a time. If your tags have gotten to the point of becoming cluttered and unusable, you probably already have tens of thousands of tagged lingqs and that might take all weekend!

Lingq 5.0 already provides a far more practical way to solve this problem. Simply delete the tagged lingqs themselves (this can be done en masse by clicking the top checkbox and selecting “more actions” and then “remove”) and start again. This time turn off the auto-tag feature and formulate a rigid set of tags which you won’t ever have to change.

Maybe you are confusing LingQs with Tags. There is no setting for turning off auto-tag on the Web and we definitely shouldn’t delete thousand of LingQs for deleting Tags. There is no function to remove Tags only. If there were I would be happy to see it.

More tag issues. I am using the browser version (Google Chrome) and within a lesson if I try to add or delete a tag on an existing LingQ, I get a new screen with this error message:" Something went wrong. False is not identified." and it kicks me out of the lesson. If I try to access the same word directly through the Vocabulary menu then deleting or adding a tag works fine. What is going on?

Hi Mark,
For me the main reason auto-tagging is such a negative is because they crowd out my own tags and make them almost impossible to find. By the time I figured out that I could turn off auto-tagging in the settings, 100s (possibly 1000s?) of auto-tags have been created. As a result, I can’t find my own tags by scrolling through the tag list so I end up losing track of them, forgetting what they are called and having to duplicate their function by creating new tags etc etc.

For me, tagging would be useful if I could quickly select the relevant tag by scrolling through my tag list. But if I have to scroll through more than 20 or 30 tags, the whole tagging system becomes impractical.

User-created tags displayed before auto-tags would be an improvement.

But ultimately, even user-created tags soon become unmanageable unless users can batch-delete tags that they no longer use.

Of course, it may be the case that I’m using tags incorrectly. How does Lingq intends for tags to be used?

I’ve also found a few minor bugs in the vocabulary section of the desktop version which can hopefully be fixed:

  • vocabulary filter “show more” brings up only those tags which will display on a single screen but doesn’t allow user to scroll up or down to view the rest of the tags.
  • you can no longer delete a tag in the vocab list by hovering over it and clicking the “x”. Now you have to select the vocab item first and you can only delete the individual tag from within the pop-up box.

Thanks!

We are currently working on a way to manage tags so let’s get that out and then revisit this. Should be available in the next week or so.

Hi. Wondering what the status is, Thanks.

We have pushed the ability to batch select terms and then add or remove tags from those terms. You should see that option in the More Actions dropdown. Click the x to remove tags that show and search or type to add new tags to all selected words.
