And a fourth issue: why is the app trying to get me to save phrases of words? Sure, “for example” is commonly together, but I don’t like to save multiple word phrases as it messes up the interface when I read. But in the app, it’s now very difficult for me to ignore the default LingQ that it wants me to create for “for example” and then save the two words separately, if I don’t know them both, as I’d like
@MatthewDonovan At first, I was surprised at seeing the already marked phrases, but after stumbling upon a few of them, and working out, how they “work”, I started to like them. Because learners, who are quite new to a language, often are not aware of these phrases - particularly when they always just see the first two or three offered meanings in the collective dictionary and use no other dictionaries! And it is quite easy to ignore phrases, that you already know: Just tap the phrase and tap the ignore word/symbol. I was wondering, why you say choosing a default word does not work. For me it works perfectly after tapping on the suggested definition. Same as tapping the ignore one. [Maybe have a look at the settings at the bottom a lesson. There is the possibility to change the settings for the word popup.]
@tiagosalvador I’m not sure how the already marked phrases are chosen, because I found a phrase consisting of just one word, but I’ve seen a few premarked - I dare to say it - hyphenated phrases and I’m starting to think, that this could be a great solution for the hyphenated words and also words, that are connected through an apostrophe.
@tiagosalvador I would like to ask for a way to recognize external lessons within the library. I know, that it is also not done in the current Android app, but I would love an indicator to make me able to differentiate at first glance between established (shared) lessons in LingQ and external (often unedited) lessons. Or are there settings for that somewhere?
Regarding lessons from the library, that I have to import first, today I wanted to import an offered YouTube video and the lesson preview showed an advertisement (below the comments).
That does not happen in the current version on my phone.
When I choose to tap “See all” for a certain topic in the library, for all lessons with audio or video the headphones symbol is shown, while the library itself shows either the headphones or the camera symbol.
@MatthewDonovan thank you for the feedback. I am fixing the course playlist issues. When you say we removed Karaoke mode, it’s right but we replaced it with audio scrolling mode that combines karaoke with the normal reader experience. Is that something you don’t like? Do you prefer karaoke mode as there are no words highlighted? Regarding creating lingqs and tapping on words, the medium sized popup that you can enable to show on single taps to have the same experience as before, should give you the same access to all buttons as before. Can you explain further what settings you have enabled? Perhaps you have auto create LingQ off and only the small popup, still tapping on the plus it should create a LingQ. Finally, we find the suggested phrases something that will add value. We will continue to review it and see if we can allow more customization on the suggested phrases experience.
@Fer.weh thank you for the feedback. I will update the library to make external lessons more clear at glance and also fix the lack of camera icon on the see all/search screens.
@Sprachentester I really don’t know why there is a difference on that screen between v6 and v7 beta. We don’t control the ads. Might be due to cookies and inner app browser. I’ll take a look.
@Fer.weh ah forgot to mention, yes the suggested phrases is exactly our proposed solution for hyphenated words and apostrophe

I did not have"Move blue words to Known when paging" enabled.
It did it anyway. It’s awful.
"Did you complete a lesson where you tapped through the list of blue words on the lesson finish screen and they all moved to known? " I never get the end screen. I saw it yesterday, pcikce dup my devices and everythign (posisbly ust bliue) moved to known. It’s madness. I assume I hit something accidentally. No mis-hit should damage your wrokd count by over 100 words. It’s not reversible.
I’ve since tried to click every blue word. But there are 100s of them and I prefer to leave them alone and only move words to known.
Word count is important. It’s really your only significant gamified feature and signal of progress. It should be accurate based on the intentions of the user.
A slightly creative solution:
make sure blue never turns to known without double confirmation. An accidental touch shouldnt’t do it. Removing the end screen might do that.
blue turning to “1” would be far far better than turning to known. If that’s easier to fix, maybe do that. But it still messes up coins and the daily target (makes is easier).
It’s an important issure. I’ll never use the app if it is more likely to mess up word count. Teh web version rarely shows the problematic end screen.
See response a bit below.
Fifth issue: there’s an issue in the LingQ ministory text that I would like to fix. It doesn’t seem possible to edit sentence / edit lesson from the app anymore
Also it doesn’t seem possible to get the previous view that would show me all the Blue and Yellow words on the page (I believe it was sentence mode that would show me this at the bottom half of the screen). This was a very valuable view when I am reading as again it saves me from needing to click as many times in order to save new words or adjust the status of existing LingQs
You cant edit LingQ mini stories, only Chief Librarians and admins.
The sentence view vocabulary is still there, on the bottom of the page as an horizontal scrolling list as part of the redesign. Let us know if that works well for you.
I’m using this on the web version.
On an e-ink screen (Boox), teh current colours or underlinign aren’t at all clear.
Please ensure colours or underlines are clear on all versions and the backup of the blue/ yellow words being on the lower part of the screen as Mahhew wants, is there also.
@MatthewDonovan , on my recent app version 7.xx, the lower words come up if I “hosw vocabulary” in settings.
Guys, some settings may have changes and aren’t very clear any more. What causes the app to mess up word ocunt to turn blue wors to known(Jesus), isn’t that clear any more.
What is the web version? This is the Android beta for Android devices. Settings are the same as they were before, same titles and descriptions, at the same Reader Settings screen, and they are also quickly accessible from the menu. The show vocabulary in Sentence mode is readily available from the menu as well.
There are only two ways to move words to known in bulk, either Paging moves to known is enabled or Completing a lesson, as it always has been.
There are a few potential bugs I noticed but I’m not sure if they are related to the beta version or not, so I apologize if the message is not relevant to the topic.
- When auto-rotate triggers screen orientation change while lesson audio is playing, the playback is stopped. To me that is inconvenient since I often trigger that auto-rotate functionality accidentally and it is another redundant click for me.
- I can’t seem to change the order of the meanings I’ve saved for a word even though there is a 6-dots icon next to each item in the list which usually indicates they can be ordered.
- I see the same LingQs of the day on the home page day after day. I clicked, did the activities and it’s still the same 25 words the next day.
- When doing flashcards, it used to be possible to edit the entry for the item you were learning which came in handy when I noticed a typo or realized I had misinterpreted the meaning of a word from context and wanted to correct that. Now I can’t find that option anymore.
There is still a lot of bugs with the vocab review section. Even if I set the number of cards to review per session as 100 it will only allow me to play up to 20 max unless I first scroll down my list of lingQs to preload them, which then spoils the answers of the flashcards kind of defeating the purpose. Also the SRS does not seem to update after completing the lesson as it used to. It still shows me the same words I just reviewed etc.
Why was the option to watch YouTube videos in full-screen mode removed in the beta version?
here are the old version pictures
Please expand the player upwards and you should see the full screen option. We will make this more prominent.
I noticed that suggested phrases prevent already saved phrases from being highlighted if their bounds overlap. This remains true even after I click on a suggested phrase and mark it as known.
