Youtube Import Downtime Thread

Hey All,

Youtube import is broken (as mentioned in other threads) in all browsers and languages (as of at least 9/4). Does anyone have any workaround tricks? I saw a mention of turning on captions on the video before launching trying the import but that did not work for me. Someone else mentioned it worked for them in Edge. I noticed yesterday Edge still had the UI for the version of import where Whisper AI could be specified, but that seems to have been removed. In any event, the Edge import does not work either.

Also lets keep this thread from getting derailed by talk about ‘Rooster Extension’ or whatever. I want a thread with updates and tips for the product I am already paying for.

You can download the video and convert it to mp3, for example by using YouTube Playlist Downloader or any similar app.
The transcription can be done via Whisper AI. I would suggest you to use Faster Whisper XXL. You have to run it from console but it is relatively fast and creates the transcription as srt subtitle file.
This file plus the mp3 can be used to create the lesson in LingQ.
Faster Wisper XXL also allows for batch transcription. So you can use Youtube Playlist Downloader to download and convert whole playlists to mp3 and then Faster Whisper XXL for transcriptions. This means two actions per playlist (+ the import which cannont pe batched  ) and the rest of the time you can do whatever you like.

I may have to try some of what Obsttorte is suggesting, but this is my process.

  1. get the link to the youtube video.

  2. Use this website to convert to mp3 and download that file. YTMP3 - YouTube to MP3 Converter (ytmp3s.nu)

  3. Go to main page of Lingq, import audio. Fill in the details and let Whisper AI in LingQ do everything.

It’ll take a little while to transcribe. After it is done, I usually go grab the text, reformat so that each sentence is its own line using another tool, and the regenerate the timestamps. I prefer sentence view to go through things usually and this cleans up the odd formatting that is usually produced from Whisper.

Yep I have done the mp3 workflow before, but sometimes I need the video. For example in semi-comprehensible input type videos, animes, or vlogs, or reviews of product type videos

It was working for a day or two, then they did a new release. For iOS there are no tricks that I am aware of.

Still SNAFU. And I’ve found lots of bugs in the player when studying a German video.

The import doesn’t recognize Cantonese and Tagalog subtitles anymore but seems to work with most languages now

Can you offer any advice about synchronizing the text to the audio? For page view, I can manually add a time stamp for the beginning of each page, but doing that for every sentence is too time consuming. I’m a beginner, so sentence view works best for me.

The timestamps are created automatically.

What worked for me was creating a lesson, then inserting the Video URL as source and go to a website, where one can download the transcript of a yt video. Once downloaded just paste the text into the transcript box, give the lesson a title and then you are good to go for now. The thumbnail could be off, so name the lesson accordingly :+1:

Thanks. I’ll tinker with that. It seemed to work, but now I’m seeing the same problem. The time stamps start out okay, but deteriorate s the video progresses.

You could try to transcribe the files on your own. Whisper AI is freely available. Check out Faster Whisper XXL

Yeah my time stamps are doing the same thing

I don’t think import audio is available for android mobile users, at least can’t see the option on mine.

It appears you have to use the website through google chrome or other browser on your android phone. Just do everything suggested but through your phone’s browser. I just tried that and it worked.

I just installed the LingQ Chrome extension and imported the below youtube video with caption in simplified Chinese - it was perfect.

Yes, it works with videos that have manual subtitles. The issue is with videos that don’t have manual subtitles.
