Hello guys,
So, in July 2024, I decided to get serious about French and started a streak that continues to this day. My goal was to reach a B2 level by September 2025, focusing on reading and listening extensively. I started slow, but soon I was reading 10,000 words a day while listening for an hour. Mainly, I consumed YouTube videos on topics that interest me, like history and politics. As of today, I’ve read 1.6 million words and know 29,000 words.
I feel very comfortable with French overall, but what impresses me the most is how my passive skills are starting to spill over into my active skills. I can recall words and phrases, and I can have conversations with ChatGPT without ever touching grammar books or practicing writing or speaking. In a way, it makes sense—English is my second language, and I also learned it by consuming media in English.
So yes, guys, with consistency and hard work, it is truly possible to achieve a high level in your target language. Trust the process!
In 8 months (with two months of minimal work), I can say that maybe I am B2 in reading, B1 in listening, and as for writing and speaking—I don’t know, I need to put it to the test.
