World Cup

Colin ist ein Maulwurf.

@TroisRoyaumes: “…Colin ist ein Maulwurf…”

Genau!

Even though I have been rooting for Germany from the beginning , I have a hunch that the final match will be between Brazil and Argentina. Anyways you know what they say: may the best win !

Germany´s gonna win the world cup.
Why? Because our coach is bursting with passion : Das ist schön! Das ist wunderschön! - YouTube

@Paule89, I can predict the result of the game: 2 Brazil X 1 Germany . I know it, if Brazil lost Germany I’ll give you some points.

@Beatrizm

I still remember how Germany lost the WC finale against Brazil 2002, but losing tomorrow would be much more disappointing than it was 12 years ago…

In 2002 I thought “Well, they´re celebrating soccer. It´s so much fun to watch them play…so yeah, we deserved to lose”. Today, Brazil is the most unfair team in the world. They use foul play to systematically destroy the game of the other team and now they´re pissed off because Neymar (who´s famous for diving and other displays of bad sportsmanship) got hurt by another player. I call it karma. They used to celebrate goals with saltos, Capoeira and Samba. When David Luiz scored against Columbia he looked like a psychopath and kicked the corner flag. It´s just…sad.

Ironically, Germany is the most fair team in this tournament and against France they´ve demonstrated how you can fight and try to play fair. If Brazil wins tomorrow, “asshole style soccer” wins as well - and that´d be more disappointing for me than seeing Germany lose a big match (again).

@Everyone

The future is bright. The future is orange

Well, at least the Netherlands are playing soccer.^^
I don´t like Robben at all, but the passion he has shown against Costa Rica was impressive.

Wow Paule, whatever medication you are on, you need to get off it!

“Wow Paule, whatever medication you are on, you need to get off it!”

It was even worse when I didn´t take my meds. I was in a delirious state and tried to convince random strangers that "we need bigger goals"´n stuff.

I totally agree with Paule, and it’s also the opinion of a lot of people I’ve talked to (Europeans, Africans, Sudamericans). I used to love how Brazil played, Ronaldo was and still remains my favourite player ever, but today’s Brazil is not Brazil. How I miss players like Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Roberto Carlos, Ronaldo… They were like magicians, making you smile because they also smiled, making you dream. After seeing a match I wanted to play, I wanted to learn their tricks. Not anymore (it’s also true for a lot of other teams).

One might argue that what matters is winning -the rhetoric of most players and coaches- and they’d be right given what is at stake in today’s football, but still…

I’ve always loved the World Cup because it’s the only tournament where you can see different styles of play, different tactics, different “philosophies”, different cultures. Alas they tend to be all the same now, more and more “European”. If the World Cup becomes a kind of international Champions League, I don’t see the point in watching it. The Champions League is of a far better level.

Vive le Tour de France ! :stuck_out_tongue:

Ahhhhhhh, I’ve been rumbled! I can no longer pretend to be a German. I am not pretty enough.

“…but today’s Brazil is not Brazil.”

The same can be said for many teams including the German side. They played spectacularly rousing offensive games during the 2010 World Cup but these days it is this 1-0 mentality that rules. Partly I think the athleticism of the modern game is to blame, another factor is that there are so few scorings so all teams are keen on avoiding scoring against them first. That is why a team like Costa Rica can almost beat a much better team like Holland by destroying the game and hoping for the best in a penalty shootout.

Well, I agree with you too Friedemann! Football looks more and more like athletics, physical performance is what matters now. This is especially true in France…

In the case of Costa Rica, I wouldn’t be too hard on them. They played rather well, except against Holland against which they did nothing else than wait for the penalty shootout. What they did during this World Cup is truly amazing, to me they haven’t been “2014 Greece”.

@Friedemann

I think we are all agreed that there is an issue here with modern football. In my opinion it all comes down (just like virtually everything else in life) to sex and booze. Oh yes.

In the old days players weren’t allowed to touch a drop of alcohol or to see their wives/girlfriends for the entire duration of a WM - this toughened 'em up…made 'em mean, moody, aggressive and as hungry as hell when they got out there to play.

These days they bring the chicks along and have, like, a good ole vacation time in Brazil (or wherever). Is it really any wonder that they play like a bunch of guys who have boiled turnips in place of Eier?

Meiner Meinung nach need we to go back to the 1950s when “…der Ball rund war, und das Spiel 90 Minuten gedauert hat…”

That way maybe we’d start seeing Wunder von Rios, und so…?

I agree with several members here about Brazil winning. A great country and a great style of football, but I feel it would be nice for another country to make it to the final besides Brazil, to, well, make it more interesting. I was supporting France and the United States, but with Germany and the Dutch the only two European teams left in the tournament, I will hope for an all European final, as it was four years ago.

But a final with Brazil and Argentina would be amazing. Until Wednesday we’ll know, good game for everyone!

I am hoping for Holland-Germany actually :wink: but give die Mannschaft better chances in both reaching and winning the final then “us”. I think Brazil will feel their loss of Neymar against Germany. Germany seems the strongest to me, although even they don’t really impress. Seems all the top-teams have difficulties this WC, nothing but minor victories since the group stages.

Let’s just hope that the ref isn’t blind and that he has taken the tomatoes off his eyes (thank you, once again @Paule89 for the video with “Fussballfloskeln wörtlich genommen”. It was the most entertaining item on this World Cup’s agenda, so far!)

My money, if I had any, would be on a South American final, but privately I am still waiting for a replay of the Germany vs Sweden game from 1958, with the German side winning this time. I am still smarting.
