@djc463: Of course that there are still cases in which we may see beautiful plays, but as a whole it seems to me that football in terms of spectacularity is on a slant. Even in the Romanian championship this fact is becoming more and more obvious . But we never know when this will change,hopefully .
Next match: Germany-USA
A draw would guarantee that both games make it to the next round…
…and a win for us would probably transform the way Americans view soccer!
Football…
Is it really true that Klinsmann sang both anthems at the start of the game? (That’s weird!)
Germany won and Algeria advances in the second stage ( not to mention that they will face one another) :).
This will be an interesting match to see.
Here a listicle, to be taken with a pinch of salt!
Am I the only one who can´t tell the difference between Republicans and The Onion?
I was flicking through a book by the awful Jeremy Clarkson, main host of the repulsive BBC car show Top Gear, at a book store in Heathrow earlier today. He has one of these real men drive big cars, cyclists are all anti-capitalist vegan fruitcakes, electric cars are for pussies, blah blah blah attitudes. The writing in the book was pretty much indistinguishable from comedy caricatures like you might find in The Orion.
Football is a threat to America’s moral decay? What does this awsome sport have to do with morality ?
I think this is all about the jealousy some people have towards football. They think that in the long run the national sports like that ‘football’( which is an imitation after rugby), baseball and other will be replaced ( by a real sport).
@Colin
I agree - there is something truly ‘unsympathisch’ about Clarkson.
Of course he is technically right about cyclists: each and every one of them is quite obviously a carrot munching bunny-hugger who doesn’t even eat honey because it doesn’t feel good to exploit the labour of the bees…! (Joke.)
#Random irrelevant fact: I failed my driving test first time around because I nearly took out an old git on a bike during the reverse park manoeuvre. The examiner said that I had done everything else perfectly, but that she couldn’t possibly overlook a close encounter with a cyclist…
My sister has a similar story. She failed her first driving test because she almost flattened a cyclist on a roundabout.
For those of you who don’t know Ann Coulter, you can’t take her seriously. She makes a career out of ridiculous, over-the-top, inflammatory right-wing statements, and then getting a huge reaction. Even people on the far-right don’t usually align themselves with her because it’s political suicide. She’s made a lot of money out of what she does, so there is apparently a market for professional trolls. Ann Coulter: trolling the USA (and occasionally the world) since the 1990s.
As for articles about, “soccer gaining popularity in the USA,” they are kind of annoying. I’ve played the game my whole life, and they do come out every 4 years for the world cup. I’d like to see a better US national team, but it’s hard to recruit younger athletes, when the best/strongest/fastest usually choose other, more popular sports.
And the Oscar goes too…Arjen Robben!
I don’t know how Ann Coulter made her way into this thread, but I agree. She is not to be taken seriously. She makes Jeremey Clarkson look like Bill O’Reilly, and Bill O’Reilly look like a serious source of news.
@Paule
Hmm, some of us are old enough to remember when Klinsmann was a player. I seem to remember that he also had a certain reputation for falling over rather easily in the penalty area. (Just sayin’…)
BTW
Go Holland! ![]()
(Apologies to any Mexicans reading this!)
Extra time?!?!?!
This game is excellent. Oliver Kahn is the best goalkeeper/sweeper in history! The Algerian defense have the biggest balls in the world!
AND WHERE ON EARTH IS KLOSE?!?!?!?!?!?!
“Oliver Kahn is the best goalkeeper/sweeper in history!”
*Manuel Neuer^^
But yeah…he´s the king of kamikaze goalkeeping xD
When you guys stop putting generic blonde German men in goal, I’ll stop calling them Oliver Kahn!
Anyway, what a game!
After 90 mins I was hoping to see penalties. (I mean, sooner or later, surely the German team has to screw up penalties just one time in history…? :-D)
