I made a few courses that rely on pictures and then texts that describe the picture or relate to it. I did this because some people have said LingQ is too difficult for a complete beginner and I wanted to see if these sorts of courses could bridge that gap for the people who feel that way.
I’d like to get some comments on whether you have found these courses useful, know of other people who have expressed opinions about them or even your own thoughts on courses like them even if you didn’t use them yourself (like if you are already at a more advanced level for example).
I tried it, and honestly loved it. really made it more approachable. are they a lot to work to set up? if you need icons i could make some really easily just let me know!
As for whether they are a lot of work: They are certainly a lot more work than the regular, text based lessons. The lessons with the photographs took loads of time, but when I discovered the page https://openmoji.org/ I was able to do the “Íslenska með myndum” courses, with the smiley icons, a lot faster than the ones with the photographs. They were still a lot more work than just regular text lessons, but I could get much more done a lot faster than before.
If you have or know of other collections of icons I can use without violating copyright, it would be great to have access to them. I don’t know how much more work I will spend doing this, because so far it’s all been volunteer work, but I’d at least take a look at it.
My idea with these courses was to make extremely easy ones, make use of how visual we are as human beings and sort of combine the features of LingQ and Rosetta Stone a bit.
I will have a look soon. I am watching Peppa Pig in Icelandic and really enjoy the fact you can see the objects they´re talking about, so having pictures alongside text should be good.
I do graphic design work, but for this honestly i’d use chat got to generate the images for whatever topic you’d want. I’d do it for you if you wanted. I know you’ve done a ton of work to get Icelandic up on Lingq
I should add that A.I. generated images can’t get a copywrite so shouldn’t be any issues for something like this.
If you understand most of what is said in Peppa pig (Gurra grís) then these courses are likely to be too easy for you, but I’d love for you to take a look at them and tell me your thoughts, both on how you like them or how you think other people would find them in terms of learning.
I would be very interested to know whether you just went through lessons here and there in random order or whether you approached them like school courses (starting at the start of 0.0, finishing it, going through 1.0 in chronological order, moving on the 2.0 etc.)
I look at how many new words there are and how many I know + the picture. So my latest one is the braud og kokur The picture helped me to associate I did know the word braud and so that’s why I picked it.
