Formatting is always an issue. Its always easier with the authors help.

If you like Harry Potter and already haven’t ventured into these books in the German language then you can get epub (drm free) versions here:

Pottermore Shop - Pottermore Publishing

I’ve been able to import the first book in the series with no issues. Formatting for the most part seems ok. Only issues, at least in the android app is that sentence view has trouble parsing the dialogue when you click the translate button if it’s too long or too much dialogue. Also, the tts doesn’t seem to work, but you can get the audiobook as well and follow along.

In regards to other sources (other than free old books like Grimm’s fairytale or other)…I’m not sure. It’s not clear there is a solution from Amazon Kindles books for everyone. I have found that I can go to my content on the web and use “download via usb” option which provides a mobi file that seems to be importable. However, I’m not sure this option is available if you don’t own a kindle (and perhaps an old one at that). If you already have a kindle book you can try and see if that option is available. Or buy a cheapo book and see if it works.

Other than that it’s possible there might be some German online book stores with drm free content. I started looking into this a little, but didn’t get far so I’m looking for answers too.

Try https://www.gutenberg.org The books are free but it will take some looking to find what you want

If you have a particular book in mind, you might try searching for the name of the book followed by PDF. Best to do this on a tablet to help prevent malware aquisition.
