I was just curios to know when people learning another language know when to move onto the other?
is it when you have reached a target amount of words or hours listening for example?
I would move to another language when I see that I reached my goal with the language Iâm studying, for example, feeling comfortable in almost every situation possible.

Great question. And Iâll be following this thread because itâs a question I have contemplated a lot over the years and have especially been âansweringâ a lot lately (to myself) as I near the likely âendâ of my Spanish journey.
First off, itâs important to remember the sage counsel of Master Steve: you will never be perfect and thus can always get better. And however good you are, you can always find ways to want to be better still. In this sense, language learning never has an end. Like all learning, itâs a lifelong pursuit. If youâre only going to learn one foreign language, this doesnât affect you much. You just keep learning the language until you donât want to anymore.
I have come to believe that, in order to retain the language youâll be âleaving,â you first need to learn it to a high enough level, probably somewhere in the intermediate range, whatever that means. Beyond that, youâll want to examine what you goals are (or where) for learning that language. If you can gauge that with some form of metric, so much the better for tracking your progress.
For example, for me in Spanish, some of my goals have specifically included the following. Some of these Iâve had since the beginning. Others I added during the journey:
âto have âfluentâ conversations with educated peers about a variety of topics interesting to me.
âto be able to work in the language with native speakers with professional competency.
âto speak better Spanish than most native Spanish speakers do English.
âtake a solo trip where I âsurviveâ on my own and have a bit of a daily route in Spanish.
âTurn on the Spanish channel and watch/listen to a news program, a talk show, a movie, a documentary, and a telenovela episode (without Spanish subtitles). And maybe a lecture/presentation too.
âpicking up a Spanish newspaper and just reading it.
âread a modern/contemproary non-fiction and fiction book without assistance.
âRead Don Quijote in the original old style Spanish (with LingQ/dictionary assistance).
Concurrently, I wanted to reach certain numbers goals that track my activity toward achieving these goals such as:
âreach Advanced Level 3 in LingQ (33,200+) Known Words.
âlisten to at least 500 hours of authentic native content
âcreate 45,000-50,000 Lingqs
âwrite 16,000-20,000 words
âspeak for 50-100 hours
âread 1.75-2 million words.
Study/expose myself to 1,000 to 1,200 hours of Spanish learning. This was based on 24 to 30 weeks of full time, 40 hours per week, of learning based on FSI/DLI standards for âprofessional proficiencyâ in Romance Languages.
Iâve pretty much hit all of the above and more, and Iâm counting down the final 118 hours of study. Iâm currently at 1,082 hours of overall study.

In any case, itâs important to say: when you move on another language, you donât have to forget the language you have learned before.
You must repeat from time to time that âoldâ language in order to keep the achieved level and not to lose the opportunity to use it.

For what itâs worth, my answer is: not as quickly as youâre currently thinking. As someone who has an intermediate level in four different languages and has switched around a lot for various reasons, if I could go back and do it all again, I would have switched far less and would have focused on just one or two languages to try to become really advanced at those. Being intermediate at four kind of sucks, because itâs almost always a struggle.
Do you remember how hard Spanish was in the beginning? Do you really want to go back to that with French?
Reaching ~17,000 known words is a decent achievement. Youâre probably getting to a point where you can enjoy engaging with the language rather than slogging through it. Thatâs when it starts getting fun. And the more you improve from here, the more youâll be able to do in the language and the more youâll enjoy it.
In terms of numbers, I have 26K known words in Portuguese, but as Iâve said before, I read a lot and my spoken level in Portuguese lags significantly behind what my known words would indicate. Iâm nowhere near the point where I feel it is good enough to switch my focus to other languages.

Thank you for the reply. I do also feel like once I am some what satisfied with my Spanish for example reaching 500 hours of listening and 25k words in Spanish I would then perhaps move on but we shall see. I am also aware that the better I become in Spanish the easier it would be to learn another romance language because of the cross overs.
I would move on to another language when I am capable of understanding at least 90% of everything that I listen and read in my target language and also capable of talking with native speakers confidently and comfortably without having much trouble to come up with the right words and without making too many mistakes.

I thought I would switch it up more regularly when I first started Spanish. In fact, I had thought Iâd start switching up languages at 5000 words. Learning Arabic and Mandarin, refreshing German and Japanese. And oh wow, did I ever change my plans since then!
when I got to 5000 words in Spanish, I started with refreshing German. I got to a few hundred words and then I reconsidered. Next, I decided to wait until 10,000 words in Spanish. Around Christmas 2017 I spent a few days refreshing Japanese hiragana. And then I refocused. Now I am going to wait till 30,000 words in Spanish to tackle German again. Or Japanese. Or start Mandarin. OrâŚ
For me, regular life has taken me in new directions. I decided back in April that Iâm going to be relocating to Ecuador by the end of 2018 for a couple of years or more. So, I definitely need more Spanish!! Every hour that I spend with another language, at this point, is time better spent in Spanish, purely for that reason, at this time in my life.
After Iâve been living in Ecuador for a couple of years, my personal subjective measure of Spanish will be to be the ease at which I am able to sit down with my girlfriendâs family at dinner and be able to fully participate in everyday family conversations, pass time enjoying telenovelas in the evening, and being able to make new friends in Guayaquil.

I was originally shooting for 20-30,000 words as Steve had said. 22ish was enough for âfluencyâ but I was still having some listening trouble so I really needed to add a few hundred more. If youâre going for 30K, then I would just go to 33K (Advanced Level 3) just to âround it offâ in LingQ. Regardless, if youâre actually moving to Ecuador for a few years, you going to activate those words like nobodyâs business and get some really impressive Spanish after that. You will meet your goals for sure.

There is a difference between âmoving onâ and âadding on.â Iâve never moved on from a language, I just decided to add on other languages into my mix. When I finished French Assimil 2, I started Assimil 1 in German, but made sure I spent a 1/2 day listening to French podcasts. Then I started reading books in both languages on alternate days as I added Korean to the mix.
I think once youâre at a B2 in a language, itâs fairly safe to add on another other language, as long as you keep both of them in the mix of daily activities. In order to feasibly do that, itâs best to find an activity that isnât âstudyingâ that can keep the first language alive for you while your studying bandwidth is spent on the new one. For me the best answer to that have been audiobooks, since I can listen to them in my dead time.

Interesting reply once I do decide to move on I think I would like to do a 80/20 split, 80% French then 20% Spanish.
