We offer Thai on LanguageMaster. YouTube/Netflix/Disney+/IQIYI are good places to find content.

The campaign page quite clearly says the sponsor is unaffiliated with LingQ.

I have a question, why do we need to fund something lingQ is gonna make money from? If you said you found some overseas firm that can do it for 2500$, have you relayed that info to the lingQ staff, and like… my question is how is it possible lingQ doesnt have 2500$ to get this done? that to me sounds absolutely insane. that should be pocket change for them.

I know that, but he also said on there he was in contact lingQ Support or something. Thats why Im trying to get an actual support person in here to verify that. Otherwise this is sketchy as hell.

@jesudo92 No, that fundraised doesn’t have anything to do with LingQ.
We are in the process of gathering content to make Thai available. We still can’t say for sure when it’s gonna happen but we are working on it. 50 languages are available at LingQ now, and the number will increase in the future.

@zoran I emailed LingQ support and was referred to North Sprung (north@thelinguist.com), who has been communicating with me on behalf of LingQ. He explained the requirements to me which are the basis of what I am raising funds for; I attached an email from him to the fundraising campaign. The fundraiser is not sponsored by LingQ, but could you please clarify or rephrase your statement that it “has nothing to do with LingQ”? I am concerned that you could give people the impression that the campaign is out of the blue and illegitimate.

I also attached it to the fundraiser, but here is the email from North Sprung.

@yenome I am saying that the fundraiser page isn’t created by LingQ and we distance ourselves from that since it can leave the impression that North suggested it, which is not the case. As I see in North’s reply you attached, he simply explained what are the requirements to add a new language. The requirements are also available here:

I can confirm that you are a long-term LingQ member and I have no doubts that your intentions are good, but I’ll leave it to other users to decide if they are going to support this.

Here is the thing about this fundraiser, since you are not a member of the lingQ development team, you dont have any say on when Thai would come out. For example lets say the fundraiser succeeds and you get the translations and the voice overs done, you pass it along to lingQ. And then what? Like who is to say when Thai would be available in beta?

Can you give any kind of official guarantee or statement that Thai will be available this year if you succeed with the fundraiser? It’s weird enough that we have to fund ourselves something that is going to make lingQ more money and that we still have to pay for afterwards, but also not even having an official statement from lingQ supporting this fundraiser and giving a statement like “if this fundraiser succeeds we’ll be able to launch thai beta this year” is just kinda like… uncertain lol. Who knows if anything is going to change if the fundraiser succeeds.

Thank you, and apologies if I gave the impression that North suggested or endorsed the fundraiser. I am not asking LingQ to endorse it. I was just concerned about the phrase that it “has nothing to do with LingQ”, so thank you for confirming that the requirements that the fundraiser was made in response to are, indeed, the LingQ requirements to get Thai added.

That’s certainly a reasonable question. I don’t know what the answer from LingQ is, but @zoran are you able to speak to, if LingQ obtains the necessary base materials at the necessary quality, what the development timeline would likely look like to get Thai added? Again, not asking you to endorse my fundraiser, but just if you can speak to the timeline of adding new languages once the materials are in hand.

@jesudo92 Let me also say that no one from LingQ ever said to me “you have to pay for this.” I have always seen it presented as “we need volunteers to create these materials, but quality tends to not be good, so we reject the majority of recordings”. I don’t have access to volunteers who could create this substantial amount of materials, so I figured I’d start a fundraiser to get it done professionally. 50 people interested each donating $50, boom done. That was my thinking. But I’m not trying to strong-arm anyone into contributing. I just took the initiative to do this because I’ve seen a whole bunch of interest on these forums in getting Thai added.

Understandable, yeah I get where you are coming from. I mean hell, if LingQ does come out and say that they would promptly release the language if they have the materials at hand, I would volunteer to help. My wife is Thai, and I have a good microphone at home. We’ll translate it and record it for a lot less than what they are asking you and I can make sure the sound quality is on par with the other mini stories for other languages. Cause I really need this site to release Thai already, but I wouldnt want that effort to be just wasted and put the whole project back in the backburner. Would need some assurances from LingQ first.

@yenome Once we have all requirements met, it usually takes a few weeks until we release a language to beta.

Yeah, I’m waiting for Thai to be added before I resubscribe. I really hope it’s soon as I’m eager to learn.
