What is the purpose of “기” in this?
it’s a part of 춥기 때문에 that working similarly to since/because in English. It’s used to show a reason or cause for something. I guess you could also say it’s similar to “on account of” or “due to” but Korean has some other constructions that get used to construe these meanings as well.
