If I see a message like “The Server is temporarily down,” I imagine that something unexpected has happened, and worry for the people who are faced with difficulties and extra work . On the other hand, if I see a message like “The server is now unavailable,” I wonder if we have had prior notification about the maintenance or something. Do you think that there is a difference between “down” and “unavailable” in meaning?
There is no difference. Sometimes these are unplanned events. Sometimes we take the site down for a few minutes to fix some nagging bug. If we are going to have the site for a longer period we will provide advance notice. AS always, sorry for any inconvenience.
