The (xxx) Learning Forum

I looked over the forum from the site of a learner. And I miss a forum where I can ask things for example about French in English (I think about starting to learn French).

The “Open French forum” doesn’t fit because I have to write in French and my French is really bad. I’m a beginner.

The “The FrenshLingQ Podcast Forum” doesn’t fit because the Subject is there the FrenchLingQ Podcast. Wouldn’t it be better to rename this forum in “The Frensh Learning Forum” where I can ask in English my question related to learning French?

When I look at the “The xxxLingQ Podcast Forum”, there are only in the EnlishLingQ and JapaneseLingQ Forum more than 10 Threads. I think these Forums could be more popular and more useful when there function is a little bit extended and new defined.

Hi Veral,
You can write in English in the "ask your tutor forum " if you have specific questions, I would be please to give you the explanations you need about French in English. You will write in French when you’ll be ready to
Marianne.

Thank you Marianne, Yes, your right. I only thought on this forum when I have question about a special content but I can use it as a normal Forum too. Sometimes my brain seems to work only in one direction
My main idea to more attract the Podcast Forum. Any other ideas? Maybe the name is too limited for the xxxLingQ Podcast?
Vera

the JapaneseLingQ forum is not really “JapaneseLingQ” forum. We use it as the Japanese learners’ forum like you said. I like the idea of changing its name.

We are in the middle of making changes to the forum/ What would you all think of just having one Forum in each language. In other words there would be an English Forum a French Forum a Japanese Forum etc. And people are free to start threads on any subject, and they can comment in any language. They can communicate in the language of the that forum or about the language of that forum. Do we really need an Open Forum, Support Forum, Updates, Ask Steve, Conversations, Content Forum, the various LingQ Forums etc.

The threads are visible and we are going to make them show up in chronological order. Our Forums developed over time, but maybe we need to rethink.

Just thinking out loud.

It’s always nice to hear your ideas. I think the Open Forum for various topics should stay. Support and Update Forum can come together in my opinion. Ask Steve is nice and it should stay because the personal contact with you, Steve, is important for the members. Conversation Forum is not needed, when Students can make direct contact to a tutor in a Personal Message System. Content Forum is not needed. That could be integrated in the Forum for each language.

I agree. I like having separate topics, although a few of them can possibly be merged together (maybe “The XLingQ Podcast” and “Open forum in X” - they probably attract just about the same people).

There is a strong bias towards writing in English in LingQ forums, which must be offputting for some learners. There’s no particular reason why a Russian who’s here learning Portugese should have to post his questions in English, is there? Or why, if he’s explaining something about learning Russian, he should have to translate his remarks into English for the forum.

I have been a member of other language forums where the rule is: in the German forum, for instance, you can write in German about anything you like, or you can write in any language if your post is specifically about learning German. This seems like a good system, and it seems to work.

Maybe we need a tag on each post to say what language it’s in, and a LingQ tab at the side of the forum page. Then if a post in one of my target languages looks interesting, but I don’t really understand it, I can import it straight to my workdesk and work from it.

Helen is right. It is too difficult for a new learner to find the forum where he can write in his native language or a language he understand.
I think we have two views:

  • Which language I’m learning → I need a Forum “Learning (xxx) Forum” where I can ask in each language, when I think I can get an answer in this language
  • Which language I’m speaking → I need a Forum in this language, for example my native language and whre I write in this language and find help in this language and it doesn’t matter, which language I’m learning. It should be named “xxx Forum” instead of “Open xxx Forum” in my opinion.

Some good ideas there Helen. We are looking at what we can do to LingQ from anywhere on the site.

We will look into combining some forums and clarifying titles.
