Anyone besides me has any issues with the software that powers this forum? Has it been discussed somewhere? Any plans to change/update it?
This is probably one of the most confusing/difficult to use flavors of a web forum I have ever seen. Or maybe I do not understand how to use it (which has not happened in any other forums).
Seriously? Nobody ever posted a message, came back a minute later to edit it, and were not able to see it, unless you did some random page manipulations like reloading, scrolling all the way down and then scrolling slowly all the way back to allow for each thread to load and such?
On my tablet, no matter what manipulations I do, I cannot see a single one of my messages in a thread where I know I posted five times or so.
Yes, I have had problems sometimes where it won’t load recent entries. Sometimes only loads stuff from a few weeks back. This normally occurs on forums with many messages. Like you I have posted a message, came back a few minutes later and could not find the message I posted - like all recent entries disappeared. But then I discovered that usually if I click on notifications and patiently wait for a while it will eventually load all messages. I complained about it at the time on that forum but no one seemed to care. I think I had even sent emails to support but they couldn’t duplicate the error and said it was my computer. So I kind of gave up complaining.
In fact it is behaving like that for me this morning on the thread “Updates to Web Beta as of Nov 1” since there are well over 200 messages there. So it is difficult for me to locate things within the past week or two. If I clock on “respond” from an email message, I can usually get there, but to navigate to the thread the recent messages don’t appear. So it is a trial and error to try to see messages on that thread.
Thanks for the post, @IraLund. Yes, sounds familiar regarding both, the forum experience and the attitude from support, When first started using LingQ, I was very enthusiastic and wanted to help to improve the platform. Tried reporting bugs but all I got was “clear cookies” and “reinstall the application”. So my enthusiasm quickly vanished.
Now, decided to give it a second shot and joined the Beta program, as I like the LingQ idea, like the product in general, want to help not just being a paid customer… and here we go again. No reaction from LingQ, whatsoever. Not even a message saying “sorry, we do not have resources at the moment, may consider in the future”, or “as far as we are concerned, everything works as designed”. Nope. Nada.
That does not help being enthusiastic. And having a poor mechanism for communication with the customers/testers is not helping either. How am I supposed to report anything if I do not know if my posts come through. I post, and they disappear. I often cannot find them later, and in my example with the tablet - I cannot find them at all, no matter how hard I try. Am I going to continue reporting issues? Probably not. Or probably much less frequently…
I have gotten to about the same place. Since not all my posts are responded to, I have been uncertain whether anyone was paying attention. So I have gotten to where I just don’t bother to report every little thing any more.
However, I do use LingQ a lot. I have searched the web for alternatives but cannot locate anything that even comes close to being an alternative. Yes, there are a lot of language learning apps and websites… but for reading very few and none as good as LingQ. So I will stick with it.
I keep track of my metrics and goals on a spreadsheet, since I disagree with LingQ’s metrics. I don’t care about LingQs. I track time I spend (I always time my daily minutes), known words and words read. In a language that I already have 30-40,000 known words I can spend a couple of hours and still not get to 13 lingQs, since I can see real progress by smoother reading, quicker recognition of words, closer study of yellow words, etc. So streak days is meaningless since I can loose a streak even though I have read for a couple of hours.
Just commenting here to confirm that I regularly experience all the issues that the two of you have described, especially for forum threads that get really long. (That was the point of the “like” I gave this post last week!)
