I don’t think we should be so dramatic when it comes to mistakes in learning material. We forget 99% of everything that we are exposed to. The stuff that we remember is the stuff we are exposed to systematically. Errors in texts are generally random.
…and I thought the accent was Aussie, but I am not good with accents.
Yes, Colin, Tim Coyle is from Australia and all his tranlations before didn’t come in for such a criticism.
I am very upset because I wanted to discuss about the contents if the same or similar occurences happen in your countries and how is your opinion of them and not eternal faultfinding and naggings about several maybe clumsy phrases that can be by everybody.
“The trunks being now ready, he DE- after kissing his mother and
sisters, and once more pressing to his bosom his adored Gretchen, who,
dressed in simple white muslin, with a single tuberose in the ample folds of
her rich brown hair, had tottered feebly down the stairs, still pale from
the terror and excitement of the past evening, but longing to lay her poor
aching head yet once again upon the breast of him whom she loved more dearly
than life itself, PARTED.”

OK. Sorry. Its just that these errors would not be made by an English native-speaker translator.
Long sentences with very difficult structure can be found in many literature masterpieces. It can be met in newspaper articles and in ‘War and Peace’ by Leo Tolstoj. I usually tell myself to simplify the sentences, especially in foreign languages.
What about the theme of the article, we cannot say the girls were coverted from Orthodoxy to Islam. They could convert themself from atheism to religion. And in those particular cases the religion was Islam. It’s hard to notice when a girl becomes orthodox but it is easy to notice when she becomes islamic. I am not sure it’s easy to find a catholic church in Russia to become catholic. It’s easier to find krishnaits or any other sect.

At the bottom of the article, it says who translated it. The person is a native speaker.
@Colin
Yeah, I don’t believe that.
I guess the word ‘Caucuses’ is incorrect here. I guess it should be the Caucasus or Northern Caucasia, isn’t it?
@ djvlbass
I have seen much worse from native speakers of English.

You are right. The rules about writing style don’t necessarily apply to creative writing. When writing an essay on history, it is best to keep things are clear and simple as possible, but when writing a novel, one might wan to make things more complex and unclear for stylistic reasons. The most extreme example is poetry. Poetry is very unclear and can often be extremely complicated, but that is hardly a criticism.

Maybe we just don´t realize that this is a poem?
