Hi,
I’ve been learning German now for over 2 years. In November I will enter B2/C1 exam and hope to start studying for it soon. But I’m sometimes struggling with my vocabulary and talking because I don’t have so many people to talk with or communicate. So I want to improve my vocabulary and learn more about the informal language maybe even from the mother speakers. For that can you recommend some roleplaying-multiplayer games as I enjoy playing games?
Any role-playing-multiplayer online game can be played in any language. My son plays these and chats with mainly Dutch and German friends. He speaks German and through his Dutch friends has learnt some Dutch which they use to confuse the English only speaking players within the game. I must warn you that the majority of Dutch and German players tend to speak very good English and “some” get annoyed when you try to communicate with them in their language, however the same is true when you do the same in Germany as they want to practise their English but keep speaking German is my advice in this situation then you both learn together.
Theoretically you can use any text intensive game for that matter. I guess the main candidates are roleplay and adventure games, although I guess the latter tend to me more close to how people usually speak, at least if the setting is somewhat contemporary.
It depends, though. What do you understand under “informal language”? There are huge differences in how people speak in everyday life depending on age, social status, level of education as well as the region they life. And of course it depends on the matter talked about, too.
Maybe another idea would be to enter German forums?! The language level used there is usually a bit below what you encounter in everyday speech, but it could be useful for picking up slang.
