Reading out loud while listening and reading

I am quite a fan of the listening while reading approach. Recently I have added reading out loud or whispering to that approach. I am using the YT Language Reactor extension rather than Lingq and listen to (and simultaneously read the subtitle) a sentence. Thereafter, I replay the sentence focussing on listening. Then I read out the sentence loud or whispering 1-3x. When I whisper, I actually use the muscles in my mouth, so it is different from subvocalising, which I normally do.

I am learning Mandarin and I feel this makes an enormous difference to my understanding of the sentences, oral fluency and probably vocabulary retention.

Has anyone used this method?

Tried it. It helps a lot. On the same boat with you Janfinster!

I went so far as to buy a plastic “phone” device that basically is a tube that goes from my mouth to my ear so I could listen to myself read stuff better. It works but I like to drink coffee when I read or study and it got in the way of that so I stopped using it. I haven’t read out lout recently but I think I’ll give it another try. I think it helps too but it depends on my mood. Sometimes I focus just fine and other times not as much which is when reading out loud seems to help the most I think.
