I was wondering, is there a special tense for when you thought something but it turned out to be incorrect? For example, albeit a dramatic one, is “Pensava che eri il mio amico!” correct? Or is there a special way to say that?
There really isn’t a special tense, but they all seem to follow the following pattern:
Pensavo/Credevo/Mi immaginavo (imperfetto) che … fosse (congiuntivo), invece/in realtà/ma …
Some examples:
Pensavo che questo video fosse utile, invece si è rivelato essere una perdita di tempo
Credevo che tu fossi speciale, in realtà sei come tutti gli altri (that’s pretty dramatic haha)
Pensavo che questa fosse la strada giusta, ma mi sbagliavo.
Notice how the following clause can be in a variety of tenses (presente, imperfetto, passato prossimo)
