Question about two phrases

I have a question about phrase: “Upped the ante” and “self-indulgent”. I am not sure what does that mean.

Thank you

upped the ante = raised the stakes

Ante is a poker term. It is the set amount you must put into the pot before you are given your cards. A higher ante means more is at risk.

If an action is self-indulgent it is primarily for your own benefit, usually at the expense of others. As an example, let’s say you want ice cream. You are the only one in your family that likes the Cookies N Cream flavor. You know this, but you buy a big tub of Cookies N Cream anyway. You are being self-indulgent.

Kcb, thank you very much.
I understand now!

You’re welcome
