For some reason, the app on Android doesn’t fully work with keyboard. I can guess a lot of the words. It’s very irritating to have to poke every word with my finger. That’s not even including the fact that sometimes I want to add my own definition (much easier with a keyboard) or want to ask AI to explain a grammar point (much easier with a keyboard).
Additionally, when I find an unknown word, I select a definition. Simultaneously with the selection, LingQ Android DEselects the word so I have to select the word again if I want to change the word to “known”. When will this be fixed?
Alternatively, LingQ could just add a way to make multi-word LingQs in the website version (on Android).
This are not unreasonable questions. I am a paying customer as I imagine most are who use these forums. It is terrible service to ignore a legitimate complaint.
As explained on other thread, we never added keyboard support for Android app. That is something we will look into for the upcoming updates.
Regarding the issue with deselecting blue words you mentioned, I am not able to reproduce the problem on my end. Is it on app version or website version on Android?
Well that’s irritating. Guess I shan’t use the app; it’s not as good as the wesite.
I seem to be unable to attach videos. I can provide a video to show you if there is a way for me to attach them to my comment. The problem is the Android app. It doesn’t happen in the website version.
I think I know what you’re talking about. But correct me if I’m wrong. You have a blue word. You click on the blue word which brings the pop up with definition(s) to select. You select a definition. The pop up closes. However, you decide (or had already decided) that you wanted to mark this word “known”. This requires an extra click to bring the pop up again where you want to mark it known.
If the above is what you are describing…
In general, I would say, just mark it known from the popup by clicking the checkbox. Having said that, there are some that I do make my own definition, and then mark as known so I can potentially understand where you are coming from. As an fyi, if you work in sentence mode, you also have the lower section under the sentence that shows all the lingq’s. You could either mark it known right in the bottom section (1 click) if you don’t care about saving a definition. Or you could click the word, select or create a definition in the popup (it auto closes). Then in the lower section of the sentence view, click the checkmark. That would do what you want as well with same number of clicks of what you seem to be suggesting above. Of course, if you don’t want to work in sentence mode this won’t work and you would need to bring the word up again.
However, what you are asking for by leaving the popup up, is that for EVERY blue word, you will require 3 clicks. One to select the word, one to select a definition, one to click a “known” value (1, 2,…known) to close the window. Whereas in the current case, it is 2 clicks. One to select the word, and one to select the definition. So you are going to annoy a lot of people if they have to now click 3 times for every blue word, unless this was a configurable option.
Those are reasonable considerations. I guess we all just use the “knowing” 1-5 diferently. It’s a fair point that people would get really annoyed.
Personally, I don’t understand how people use their finger. I too often need ChatGPT to explain a concept that I don’t understand, but to each their own.
I just hope LingQ fulfills the not unreasonable request to use a keyboard on the app. I mean, come on. Right now I’m using the website but I can’t make phraes LingQs this way.
Some folks have been using LingQ for a long time, and well before ChatGPT existed, so it may not be a staple in their “arsenal”. I was actually using it a lot a year ago, but have been using it less so, but I’m also probably at a level where I don’t really need all that much explanation most of the time.
Also, some people may just be used to having that bit of unknown going on where they don’t feel the need to check out a chat gpt or they feel it may interrupt the flow.
For me, the phone is great…I have lots of time during the day to read a page or more. I can fit in learning anywhere, so I’ve gotten quite used to that. I do love using chat gpt to explain things, but convenience for me outweighs everything as I have very little time to sit down with a keyboard. I am able to use chat gpt fairly easy with the phone and finger though. I just copy whatever phrase or sentence and plop it into chat gpt. I have created my own “gpt” that already has the baked in prompt to explain a sentence so it’s only a few clicks to get what I want out of it when I need it.
Anyway, hopefully there is a way for the keyboard shortcuts to be used with the app at some point for you!
Hello @JeremyBrunette we have new feature ‘Explain this’ for LingQed words. You can see it in the Notes section in the popup (both on Android and WEB). Could you please check, maybe it would be helpful for you?
Also you can try turning statuses for popup in Settings (‘Always show status’). It can reduce number of taps/clicks. You just tap on the word and select status.
As for the popups, at least presuming I’m understanding what you’re referring to, I don’t use them. I read half a page at a time [the other half is dedicated to seeing the word, my definition, and all the suggested definitions (and the dictionaries, notes, etc.)].
Edit: I just tried to use the explain this feature. It doesn’t exist for the web version (at least not when on Android).
Hi @JeremyBrunette It should be available in the browser on Android too. It is displayed for LingQed words only (yellow or green). Maybe you tried the new word (blue)?
