How can you compare two outstanding writers who lived in completely different times? It’s like comparing an apple to a pear - both delicious fruit, but incomparable, one isn’t better than the other.
Look, I’m a huge fan of Orwell, read all his books and some of his essays. Dickens and him are just incomparable. One big difference is the deep & detailed analysis of politics Orwell can carry out. As far as I can judge, Dickens doesn’t go that far in politics.
Unlike Dickens, Orwell has written some non fiction books, think of Homage to Catalonia and Down and Out in Paris and London.
I suppose this irrational comparison is just another attempt by academics to get funds for their “research”
There is also something inherent to both writers. Both wrote about defects of ruling regime. But they express it in one’s own way. Orwell - His stories are more satirical and allegorical as compared to Dickens’s novels.
