New video mode and in line translation on Android, new lesson editor on Web - Update March 20/26

We’re very excited this month to have added some significant new features on the Android app and web app.

On Android, you’ll now see a new video mode for YouTube imports. When you open a video, you get a video view with full lesson scrolling, live highlighting, and the ability to pause, create LingQs, and review LingQs as you go. Buttons along the side let you toggle sentence translations and jump back in the video. We’re really happy with how this feels and are working to bring this mode to our other platforms soon.

On the Android reader in page mode, you can now show sentence translations inline, so you see the original text with the translation directly underneath as you move through the lesson. You can turn this on or off in the themes widget, and it will also be added to the main reader settings. If you try it, please let us know how it works for you.

On the web, many of you will have noticed the new lesson editor. We completely rebuilt it to make it cleaner and more functional, and text editing should now feel more standard and less restrictive than before. Our aim is to make managing and editing your imported lessons much easier. We’ve been ironing out a few wrinkles and the new editor should now handle everything the old one did, but in a smoother, simpler interface.

We’ve also introduced a new import flow on the web. It’s designed to be easier and clearer, highlight content sources better, and give us a solid foundation to keep improving. Importing and editing lessons is a key workflow for our power users, and our legacy code was holding us back. Revamping this area should give you a better experience today and allow us to iterate faster on these critical capabilities going forward.

As always, we really value your feedback on all of this. Your comments and suggestions continue to drive a lot of our development.

Hello Mark, what time will the ISO upgrade to this new video mode?

Probably a few months away yet as it’s part of some major upgrades we are making on the iOS reader.

I noticed that with the new Android app changes, the sentence view no longer has the two speed selections that allow you to listen at the normal speed or a slower/faster speed as desired. This feels like a backwards move to me, as I found it quite helpful to be able to quickly jump between slowing down and normal speed, and part of my listening practice would be cycling between them. Now I have to tap tap tap tap tap tap tap to get the same style of practice in.

Would it be possible to get this functionality back in the Android app?

Really hoping the new video mode comes to desktop soon because its great
