New language - Cebuano?

Hello

I have used LingQ to learn a couple languages. As someone who loves to read, it has been a super effective method to fill gaps in my understanding. I have started to get into Cebuano, often referred to generally as Bisaya, and was a little bummed out that it wasn’t yet offered on LingQ. I was curious if anybody knew if this was a possible language update any time soon or if there are some other useful resources?

As far as I’ve been going, I have pretty much relied on Bloombooks, Bisaya Classroom by Jonah, Bluebird, and the Ling app. Everyone I’ve found seems to resort to those same resources. I’m curious what more there is. Thanks!

P.s. from what I’ve read, Bisaya seems to have a higher population of native speakers so I’m a little surprised that there are far more offerings for Tagalog than Cebuano.

Hi Calebamorris,

I’m newer to Lingq, but have a moderate level of Tagalog, since I studied regularly for several years before marrying my wife, who knows Tagalog/Illongo/Bisaya.

Since Tagalog and English are the official languages in the Philippines, resources for Tagalog are widespread, while they are scarce for Bisaya, Ilocano, and others. I think Tagalog got the government stamp of approval because it was prevalent near Manila, so the language already had a track record for diplomatic & international communication.

For those reasons, I wouldn’t expect Lingq to add Bisaya in the immediate future, though with luck we may be pleasantly surprised. I agree, it’s frustrating that Bisaya is so common for everyday conversation for so many Filipinos, yet study materials are relatively scarce.

Other free resources that might help you are local news broadcasts (outside of Manila or national broadcasts). Try 105.5 Brigada News FM Agusan, for example. It’s a bit dry for conversation purposes, but they have a hundred + YouTube videos in playlist form that you can loop for hands-free Bisaya language input. Good luck!
