If you’re using OpenAI’s API why use whisper instead of the newer gpt 4o mini transcribe? It’s the exact same price with FAR better word error rates. Would be a game changer for mandarin and many other languages LingQ offers
We are in the process of doing just that for certain languages, but that comes with its own set of challenges since it doesn’t provide timestamps like whisper does

Ahh I see. Not having timestamps is quite unfortunate since I assume that would mean no sentence mode. Transcribing the audiobooks for imagin8’s journey to the west series and using sentence mode has been a game changer for my Chinese reading.
We think we can generate timestamps the way we used to so are working on a combined solution. We’ll see how it goes.

So if we go to a youtube video and then use the chrome extension to upload it to lingq that counts towards the 10 hours? Thanks.

just a reminder guys that not so long ago the Whisper’s transcription was almost a default option

Sometimes whisper not do it’s job but it’s still count to limit… Now I’m searching options (Even Github whisper addon but I’m not tech savy) I just still add small videos but dream of learning from full movies is lost…
Can we just have the importer use the subtitles that are included in the video instead of the expensive whisper technology?

A way to use Whisper AI on your own machine, should you want to transcribe locally your stuff. Manual is in German:
Same website translated to English with Google translate on how to set up Whisper AI on your own computer. Needs Python programming skills.
It’s the 2nd day of June, and the interface still says that the limit has been exceeded.
How does this even work? Why hasn’t the limit been reset? Additionally, there are no signs of a tracker as of now.
The way this whole thing is happening is completely unacceptable.

That’s interesting. It appears mine was reset, and I was able to import again.
yesterday I also managed to transcribe a bunch of files with a total duration of 1 hour or so, two of which were only partially transcribed 
and then I saw the limit again
Yeah, I burned the last of mine on some failed transcriptions last month. I’ll probably learn how to convert them outside LingQ just to get around it. I guess it’s a problem getting better at the language, because I can race through more text faster!
It would be nice to have the transparency with a tracker!

I saw the message saying “You have exceeded your monthly audio transcription limit (600 minutes/month),” but it’s already June 4th and it looks like the limit still hasn’t reset. I’m still not able to upload audio files. Just wondering if the reset is delayed or if there’s something I need to do? Thanks a lot!
I use the free tool GitHub - thewh1teagle/vibe: Transcribe on your own! once i reach the limit. hint… If there is a way to link to this tool or use our PC resources to generate the transcription automatically then there would be no need for any limits.

+1 for a Premium+ subscription option for those who need more than 10h per month. I do, as I work primarily from podcasts (which I listen to once only) and am studying multiple languages here at LingQ. Also I much prefer transcription generation to be wholly integrated within my LingQ workflow; doing this myself would add extra steps that would demotivate me.
I get why people might want a premium subscription, but honestly, I think it would just split the current options even more. For folks who just want to pay once for a solid, standard subscription, I don’t think it’d be the best deal. It feels a bit unfair to have a less-than-great experience just because others can pay more
People are begging for paying more. I just can’t understand it. Ask for raising the 600 hour first.
