Language speaking opportunities while traveling

This summer, me and my girlfriend will go on a trip to Taiwan together. She is a Taiwanese citizen and we will visit her family who lives in Kaohsiung City. I am really looking forward to meeting them and even though I am still a beginner at the language I’m happy to know that I will get the opportunity to practice chinese.

Since we will travel around the country as well I have started to look up different places to visit and things that I want to do, ranging from hotsprings to a trail-walk in Taroko National Park. However, I feel a bit lost at planning activities that include me using the chinese language so I thought I’d post the question here and ask the Lingq language community for tips and trix.

As a language student visiting the target language country, what are the things to do to really get the most out of your studies? Also, have anyone of you been to Taiwan before and can recommend places to see, things to do, food to eat?

I enjoyed sitting in coffee shops in Taipei and simple family restaurants. There is a 24 hour book store but can’t remember the name. Depending on your ability to read, I would just continue my normal learning activities and take advantage of every opportunity to listen and speak in whatever situation regardless of how well you do.
