KOREAN READING IS SLOW AND ANKI

Hello,
I am studying Korean , my reading is slow , I did like to read and listen but my reading is so slow even if I slowed down the voice to 0.60x . I want to improve my reading. And I also saw some vocabs or words that are same but 는 을 are added , do I still mark them as known word? even tho I marked them up as known word before. The particles make it look like it’s a new word. Please how can I improve my reading . I use anki and I do 50 cards per day because I want to get at least 1000 words ,so I can understand more of what I am reading . But it’s very hard for the words to stick . I keep forgetting them. What is best way to use anki or should I abandon anki completely? I am a beginner, I only know few words and the Hangul. Please share your thoughts .

Thanks

I don’t use Anki. Context means everything with Korean vocabulary so I don’t find things like Anki all that helpful.

What I do suggest is watching Korean videos. Even if you barely understand anything. Whatever captures your interest will do. Have the videos playing all day, every day, in the background, Listen to it like it’s music. Watch the videos whenever you have a chance to actually sit down and focus. Before you study or after, it doesn’t matter.

You need to get the melody, tempo, the musicality of the language into your head. Reading will improve with exposure to the language.

If your mother tongue is very different from Korean it’s a big mistake I think to focus on text without immersing in the language.

I don’t think this is going to work if you are still at a beginner level. You should probably seperate both things, at least partially. You can, like mentioned by Tamarind, expose yourself to the sound of the language. For lessons it is probably a good idea to read them first and try to listen to them while reading afterwards, maybe only at a per sentence base.

Personally I used the opposite approach compared to Tamarind. I mainly focused on reading. Audio exposure I mainly got by watching K-dramas, but there I used subtitles in my native language. That also worked quiet well thus far.

Active immersion.? With a Korean subtitle?

Have you been through the mini stories already? If not, you should.

Then, it’s a matter of reading and listening at your level. Lingq allows you to import the content you want so you can study it, so do it as much as you can. Don’t worry about not remembering everything and reading slowly at first, this is normal as a beginner and it will improve.

You can learn the most 1000 common words using Anki if you want, but do not feel that you need to do flashcards if you hate them. The more you’ll be exposed to the language, the more words and expressions will stick in your long term memory. Past a certain point, flashcards offer diminishing returns in my opinion. If you want to use them after you’ve learned the most common words, you should go with sentence cards.

주연은 수영장가요.

수영장 = swimming pool
가요 [가다] = goes

Yes I have been through some mini stories ,still going through them . Is there any reason why you would recommend sentence vocabs? Any effective method of reading with lingq ?

Because flashcards such as 나무 = tree might work well for concrete beginner words, but not for more abstract words. Also, it’s important to learn the words in context, not in isolation.

I don’t have any specific reading method. Just consume as much content as you can would be my advice.

It is easier to memorize vocabulary if you learn them in context, too. And as a side effect you practice grammar and syntax in addition. It is also more natural. You will most likely rarely ever have to need to know the meaning of one word solely. What you wanna know is the meaning of a sentence. Why should you practice language in a different way then you are using it later on?

It is also easier to memorize the korean alphabet if you learn words instead of trying to learn the letters on their own. At least that’s my experience. The human brain makes strong use of associations. Different chunks of knowledge never exist in the void, they are always connected with something else.
