Here are a couple of suggestions regarding future bookings.
APPOINTMENT CONFIRMATION
For future booked appointments with any Lingq tutor do your best to confirm directly with the tutor, after you have booked the lesson, the time and date of the appointment that you booked. Of course you and the tutor may be in different time zones, so when mentioning times and dates, make sure to include your geographical location. To contact the tutor simply means adding the tutor to your Skype contacts and then reaching out to the tutor on Skype: “Hi. I
ooked an appointment with you via Lingq for such and such date. Please respond to me here, on Skype, to confirm that you are aware of the appointment date and time.” Hopefully the tutor will respond and then you’ll know for sure that the tutor is aware of the booking. If you do not hear from the tutor, the tutor may not actually be aware of the booking. In which case you might decide to cancel the booking with sufficent advance notice to receive an automatic refund.
APPOINTMENT INITIATION
Additionally, initiate the session by calling the tutor on Skype, not texting, the tutor on Skype. Don’t wait for the call. Make the call. Initiate the lesson by calling the tutor to begin the session. Do not hang up. If the system hangs up, there will be a visible record in Skype. Take a screenshot, so that anyone can see from the screenshot: (1) when you made the call (time and date), (2) who you made the call to, and (3) the fact that the call was not answered. Then stick around for a few minutes (whatever amount of time makes sense under the circumstances) and make the call again, following the same screenshot proceedure.
This sounds like a huge hassle. Why not just use iTalki? There you don’t need to confirm lessons with teachers beforehand (they’re notified by the system automatically when you book) and you don’t need to take screenshots to prove your teacher never showed up to get your money back.
I have gotten the refund now
Your mention of time zones makes me wonder if what happened is a Daylight Saving mix-up These few weeks in spring where North America is in Daylight Saving and Europe isn’t yet (and ditto for fall) are a nightmare for any sort of cross-Atlantic scheduling, especially when you try to plan ahead and look up the difference before North America makes the switch.
That’s great, Adaku. I’m glad you got a refund. What did you do to get the refund?
