Some recources such as Texts with audio. Elementary level. Вредний кіт. - Learn Ukrainian have text with accents on top of the cyrrilic letters to show where the stress is. Even some community made texts in LingQ have them. This is bad because LingQ obviously doesn’t recognize these words as the same word but instead thinks it is a different word.
So my Question: Is there an online tool, notepad++ extension or something that can do this ?
I have googled and found quite a few tool but they either A: Dont work with kyrillic letters or B. also destroy letters such as й. Is there a tool that actually works ?
I found a solution, thread can be closed:
- Copy the text into a text editor and replace all й with ß or any other letter thats not in the cyrillic alphabet
- Use this: Remove Accents from Text - Online Accents Removal to remove the diactretics
- Copy the result into the editor again and replace ß with й
Now you have a working text.
Edit: ї also has to be replaced in advance as it becames i otherwise
“…LingQ obviously doesn’t recognize these words as the same word but instead thinks it is a different word.”
Indeed, this is how LINGQ functions. It has two consequences: 1. We have to give a translation of the word two times. 2. LINGQ counts the word with accent and the same word without accent as two words, so that the number of known words is not correct. Is this a problem? Not for me. The number of known words in LINGQ is ambiguous even without the accent question. All the different forms of a noun or of a verb make it impossible to say “I know 30000 Russian words” if I have that number of known words in LINGQ. Better not bother about this.
But I think the developpers of LINGQ should be able to make the system consider свобода and свобо́да as the same word, enabling us to give the translation once!
