As the title suggests I’m wondering how to make the dictionary entries also be in my target language. I wasn’t able to see any option of importing a dictionary so I’m guessing that’s not possible. I tried changing some and all of the preferred dictionaries into ones with the flag with the language I’m trying to learn, but the dictionary entries are all still in English. I’m trying to not rely on translation when possible. Is there no way of having dictionary entries in your target language or am I missing something?
You didn’t say if you were using the app or the web, but in general, if you click on word you see the list of dictionaries above several meaning you could choose if the word is blue, or above meanings you’ve chosen already if the word is yellow or known.
In the Dictionaries section, you should see an option to “manage”. Click that. Note…in the app, you might have to swipe to “expand” the LingQ such that it fills the screen to see the “manage” option.
You’ll see the list of dictionaries already chosen (to start they would all be in your native language). About halfway down on both the web and the app, you’ll see a dropdown. On the web it says “All resources” and it probably showing your native language flag. On the App, it says “Language” and is likely showing your native language.
In these dropdowns, select the language you want the dictionary to display. Whether it’s your target language, native language, or some other language you are learning. Below that point then will list all the dictionaries that can be used for that chosen dictionary language. Click the “+” to add them to your list of favorite dictionaries.
I’m using the web just for note. I’ve already tried what you’ve suggested and making all the dictionaries in the language I want. Despite this all the meanings given are still in English and sometimes when at least one meaning is in the language I want if I expand and scroll down, it’s still a mixture of both English and my target language.
Anything you’ve lingq’d before where you’ve selected native language meanings will continue to be there. You’ll have to remove those if you don’t want to see them, so that only the meanings you selected in your target language will remain.
I think you’re going to essentially have to hand enter the target language meangings everytime. In most cases people won’t have saved a LingQ with the target language meaning so you won’t be able to fall back and select those. Also, the AI and sentence view is going to use your “Dictionary Language”. If you want to change how these behave you’ll have to go to the Reader settings. Then there’s a section called “Dictionary” language. You’ll want to move your target language on top. I’ve not tried doing this for the language I’m learning, so I’m not exactly sure what’s going to happen, so you may be doing some experimenting here. I have done this to help practice output…for this I go to the English section of LingQ as if I was trying to learn English. I then try to translate from English to my target language. In this case it will use the Dictionary Language you have selected near the top that is not the same as the target language. So I can verify my translating. In your case, I think you would have to put your target language at the top of the “Dictionary Languages” (in the reader settings).
