How can I stop this banner from appearing while using the reader? I find it very distracting and there doesn’t seem to be a way to hide it.

I think you just admit defeat and press learn more. Had the same issue setting up LingQ on my girlfriend’s device. Once we went through the tutorial it stopped bothering.
