He may have been found wanting

I have not heard this expression in a while but heard someone say that today. I think it may just be a British expression. Does anyone know?

Is it not something from the Bible, about “being weighed and found wanting”?

It is not an everyday expression even in the UK, but it is used every now and then. “To be found wanting” means something like “not meeting expectations”, “not being suited”.

SanneT has got it right: it’s from the book of Daniel in the Old Testament. We use it in the U.S. occasionally, too, usually slightly ironically–that is, in some not terribly important context.
