Has LingQ always been so flaky?

How do I turn on the karaoke mode in the app?
Is it in the Configuración section off the triple dots of the lesson somewhere?

So far I cannot find any way to turn on karaoke mode in the app–only in the web browser.
And in the web browser, in karaoke mode, all translation functions are broken, it appears.

Upload audio file. Press button to generate automatic transcript. I tried it with a fairly long and complex audio from a German news source that was too difficult for me to understand without help. The transcription produced what seemed to me to be a totally accurate German text which I could then study before I listened to the audio again. As far as I know I this facility isn’t available in the app.

Click on the headphone icon, than on the icon containing two arrows.

Actually transcription from audio also works in the app. I didn’t know that. Using the file import function for lesson creation. Strange paragraph arrangement, otherwise perfect.

When you start the audio in the lesson it will become visible.

But when I start the lesson the bar that becomes visible shows:

an up arrow (to switch to karaoke mode, I think)
a rewind 5 second button
a pause button
a speed button (eg, 1x)
and an X

I still don’t see any headphones, sadly.
Not sure if I am not looking in the right place?

This is on Android. It might differ on other operating systems.

I use an iPad too. I download audios from a German news source, then upload them to the iOS Lingq app

Could you provide a link or the name of the news source? I have a suspicion these are native level, rather than B1 and B2.

Thank you, that’s good to know. With French I often listened to barely intelligible input, and it was very useful.

Sorry, I missed this question earlier but in the iOS app you actually can do what you are asking for in Karaoke View. If you play that view, the text scrolls along. If you come across a word you don’t understand, you can tap and hold it to open to that sentence in Sentence View and look it up.

I have been using LingQ off and on since 2022. It has ALWAYS been a buggy mess. Sometimes it is just a little irritating. Other times it is dang near unusable. I typically end up swearing off of it and moving on to something else.

However, I keep finding myself coming back because, despite its many, many flaws it is still (in my opinion) one of the best tools for language learning. The concept is solid, and the intent is there. And when it is functioning reasonably well, it is an incredibly useful tool.

But, just today I am dealing with trouble again myself. The whole reason I am here right now is because I am in one of the “return to LingQ” phases in my on/off cycle. I wanted to start over in a language. So, I tried to delete the language so I could start over. But it is not working so I was looking for help on the forum. It has been over 4 hours and I cannot get the language to delete so I can start over. It just keeps loading and reappearing in my account. I realize that it says it may take a bit to delete the content. But, really? 4 hours? Where is this data being stored, Jupiter?

This is the kind of terrible service that ends up chasing me away from LingQ over and over again.

There is no way around this any more. Lingq has given up on itself. There seems to be no more interest in solving problems at all. First, the Youtube importer no longer works, when the video has no autogenerated subtitles. So I chose a video with autogenerated subtitles and import it. Lingq doesn’t have to do anything than grab the subtitles, that are already there. For some reason, only the subs for the first 30 min appear in Lingq. Then the lesson just stops, but the video is continuing. Okay, the importer does not work at all, whether the video has subs or not. So I use the work-around, download the video and have it transcribed by whisper but know only the first half hour gets transcribed. The only difference i that it takes 20 minutes longer. The next workaround would be to cut each video into pieces so that no import is longer than 30 min but that seems to much effort. Why is it that Lingq can no longer transcribe a full podcast or even just grab the full already existing subs. They are sure comfortable to advertise and charge for the function. Why does it not work? Why does nothing work?

Something happened to Chinese word splitting in the last day or two. Instead of being just randomly wrong as it’s been for a while, suddenly, particles, prepositions, etc. are consistently being attached to words around them, creating a huge number of phrases that should not be phrases.

I’d like to see an answer/comment about this from the staff as well. Or better, I’d like to see the parsing back to how it was before.

Wow–had no idea, as clicking on words in karaoke mode does nothing.

I’d disagree that nothing works. Lingq have been responsive to complaints about the whole thing slowing to a crawl or worse. There has been a recent dramatic improvement. It always works fine for me now - once the text has been successfully imported. It seems fine with audio as well, though I can’t speak about video as I don’t use it.

The next stage is to get them to work on the many problems with import functions. I use workarounds, but that’s not good enough. I think they need very specific descriptions of what goes wrong and when. I’ll make a start as soon as I have the energy. I’d agree with @Juan_Estruch that there is no other software that does what Lingq does. It’s worth persevering.
