Has ChatGPT become useless?

yes, this is great to create stories with words you want to accelerate your learning. I think it can handle more than 10 now, for sure. It’s a pretty awesome feature that LingQ could implement itself, taking directly from our internal vocabulary.

One thing to consider is optimizing the prompt you are using to generate a response in ChatGPT.

Try asking ChatGPT to optimize the prompt you are providing to fit your needs. Then use that prompt just changing the appropriate portion or create a GPT. The GPT approach might be the more efficient in the long run

My prompts are pretty basic so far. At the start I tell Chat I am a reading XXX book in French. After that I quote a sentence that I don’t understand, followed by a coion then the part I find confusing followed by a question mark. (Chat understandably prefers I supply the context.)

For example:

Vous voulez laisser Gulick se charger de les nettoyer tout seul pendant que vous peignez la girafe : peignez la girafe ?

Do you want to let Gulick handle the cleaning by himself while you paint the giraffe? : paint the giraffe ?

Then Chat explains:

The French phrase “peindre la girafe” is an idiomatic expression that means to waste time or to loiter. It’s similar to the English expressions “goofing off” or “dawdling.” The visual of painting a giraffe suggests a task that is not only unnecessary but also likely to be time-consuming and unproductive. It’s a playful and imaginative way of saying that someone is not focusing on what they should be doing.

So, in the context you provided, the question “Vous voulez laisser Gulick se charger de les nettoyer tout seul pendant que vous peignez la girafe?” could be translated as, “Do you want to let Gulick handle the cleaning by himself while you goof off?” This highlights a contrast between someone taking on a responsibility and others who are not taking things seriously

One need not be a Certified Prompt Engineer to get useful results! Just a simple prompt can be a real boon to learning.

Sometimes Chat decides to answer in French. I play along or ask for English.

I’ve been using 3.5, and Chat GPT works fine even though it’s free. Maybe it depends on how you prompt it and what you want it to do.

ChatGPT 3.5 IMO is fine for language learning. Chats are based on language and they do language well.

I found ChatGPT-4 better for general questions and receiving less mechanical responses. Plus you get DALL-E, the amazing AI image creation program.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the company which created ChatGPT, humblebrags that ChatGPT-4 “is not phenomenal. It is mildly embarrassing at best. GPT-4 is dumbest model any of you will ever have to use again.”

OpenAI already has ChatGPT-5 in the pipeline, likely to be released this summer (2024). Sam knows a lot more than we do.

Hold on to your hats!

There is definitely a huge difference between ChatGPT 3.5 and 4.0. Currently after 20 or so prompts it reverts back from 4.0 to 3.5 and ChatGPT becomes pretty “stupid”. I guess they do it on purpose to make people subcribe to the 4.0. version.

For instance it used the term 外客 (foreign visitors) in 4.0 and in 3.5. it corrects me when I use it and says “this is not a commonly used term in Chinese”.

Same issue is here. It makes same mistake again and again :))

Still technology is new, also we don’t know how to use it well. A bit sad honestly.

@lexaznaurov
You probably clicked manage account when you don’t have an account setup yet. What you need to do is just click another word and try to run one of the chatGPT functions and it will direct you to your free trial. I will fix that in the future to make it more clear.

I get this misteke every time
“Make sure to select a word. If it is still not working, select another word and try again.”

@lexaznaurov Yes, Lingq just updated their website which caused it to break. I have made a fix and submitted it for release. It should be available within a day or two. I will post here and email our users when it is out. Sorry for all the inconveniences.
