Been thinking about how I want to approach the rest of these 90-day Russian challenges (I have about 85 days left).
Instead of setting strict word count or XP goals, I’m trying to focus more on consistent daily time with the language. Russian is my main focus right now — comprehension still feels like the hardest part for me — while German is more in maintenance mode.
I got the idea for this kind of flexible structure from a video about building consistent routines and schedules. I decided to adapt it into three simple energy tiers:
Good Enough
Better
Best
Different days of the week are assigned to different tiers so I’m not forcing myself to go all-out every single day. The idea is pretty straightforward:
Low energy day = light exposure
High energy day = deeper immersion
Long-term I still want the same thing — being able to comfortably watch Russian Netflix with Russian subtitles. I’m just trying to build something sustainable that I can actually stick with for the long run instead of burning out halfway through.
What does your “Good Enough, Better, Best” look like?

This is a cool idea. I watched the video and she seems to have a good system to prevent burnout and still make meaningful progress. I like the idea of the long term achievable goal, not doing something crazy like going infinitely until native in all categories. Comprehending all Netflix content is still lofty but finite and should be achievable in a few years with minimal daily practice. Good luck

I end up doing something similar. I generally plan to do a full hour, unless I have other pressing priorities, but I still do a minimum of 10 minutes each day.
In practice, a ten minute session is just a LingQ session. With more time, I do either a session with a tutor, on LingQ or with ChatGPT. With ChatGPT I work on developing language islands, interaction and feedback, focused pattern practice, etc.
I do more listening later in the day concurrent with other activities (while driving, exercising, etc.).

Yeah, the whole point of the tier system is to make it sustainable. I was getting burned out trying to go hard every single day, so I decided to build in some flexibility instead. Some days I just don’t have the energy for deep work, and that’s okay — as long as I still show up in some form.
My longer-term goal is to reach 5,000 known words on LingQ. At my current pace, I’m aiming to hit that by the end of September or early October.
Thanks for the comment!
Yeah, I’ve been trying to be more honest with myself about my energy levels instead of pretending I can go hard every single day. Some days I’m just not in the mood for deep focus, so having the “Good Enough” tier helps me still make progress without feeling like I failed.
The goal is really just to keep showing up consistently over these 84 days instead of burning out trying to be perfect every day. I’d like to see how many “BEST” days I end up with.
