Steve, I appreciate all your efforts to improve the LingQ system and to mitigate user complaints.
However, if you have a look on the Chinese conversations page, you see that there are no tutors at all. How will you attract some Chinese people to help actively other learners here with their Chinese studies? That is still not solved. LingQ has now a new language every month, that’s really great, but what about Chinese? The language is becoming more and more important, but the library and the tutoring are in my opinion rather unattractive.
"Und obwohl der kleine Prinz auf der Erde viele, viele Rosen sah, versteht er nun, dass seine Rose für ihn einmalig ist und er sich um sie kümmern muss. …"Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (Der Kleine Prinz)
Hape, I have been in touch with two groups of Chinese people here in Vancouver and will be meeting them next week and hope to have some tutors in place shortly.
I agree with mikebond could you take out the notices for who sent a rose to who in the activities tab? I don’t see why everyone needs to know perhaps just send an email notification only to the person receiving the rose!
A rose, to us, is a public form of recognition. The gift points, on the other hand, are private. That is what we have decided to do. Some people will like this and some won’t. If you don’t want people to see you give a rose, don’t give a rose.
@ Steve, I think you somewhat misunderstood what I ( and perhaps Mikebond) was saying. I dont care if people see If i give a Rose or not. That’s not my concern at all… I do not hate the roses and I do want to keep them in Lingq BUT Let me explain. To put it bluntly I think its annoying ( and useless) to see under the Activities tab ( when you click on friends) that X person send Y a rose. I don’t like that it shows up there simply because I think it has nothing to do learning/ motivating me to keep learning. I know I can filter out the roses BUt its annoying to see the whole activities section inundated with all the rose giving at first glance. I liked how before the main things you could see was what people are studying and how many words people now know which is alot more motivating than seeing people receiving roses.
Yes , I know you cant please everyone But perhaps mike bond and I arent the only ones that feel this way.
I’m all for people giving a rose for saying thank BUT I’m Strongly against seeing such item being listed in the activities page. My solution to this wouldn’t be to get rid of roses. Far from it. My suggestions would be to either
Why not share the rose on someones Wall instead? That way the rose is still in display , ,Just doesn’t advertises it to EVERYONE in the activities page. Just like when someone posts on someone elses wall, not everyone gets notified…
If that’s not possible at all , Would it be possible for the Activities page to be set on the most important activities such as the Studied lesson filter when you first see the activities page instead of it being set to “all”. That way the roses dont overtake everything else. And if people care to see who’s giving a rose to who they can just click the Rose filter. To me seeing who gave a rose to who on a language site is the last thing Id want to see…Especially from random people…
As mike bond said , would it be possible to just not put the notice in the activities page. perhaps list it somewhere that isnt soo obvious
I dont mind the roses I just hate that its sooo in your face…
Keroro. I hear you. I also heard from Mikebond. I am not of the same opinion. We will wait to hear from others. We never know when we start new activities or features, just how they will be received by our community. We are not going to make any changes for now. Let’s give this some time.
@steve: the fact is that, before the roses inundated the Activities page, you would mostly see what lessons the other learners were studying and thus discover some collections you didn’t know, in the case of vast libraries like the English one. That is certainly more motivating than reading the list of the dozens of people you sent a rose, too.
I see your point, but then it is still early days. The novelty of the roses will wear off. Still, we are watching this and discussing various options. Your points have been made.
Some stuff is just way too new and I hate it all immediately! and I demand that this thing that is new and bothers me, though it has zero effect on my learning of languages, be changed right away, without hesitation and swiftly!
Legal notice: please feel free to copy and paste this every time lingq does anything new, I won’t sue you so long as you put in the forum, however you may not record it and put in the library, then I will sue you, you thieving hound.
I am sat here with rolled up sleeves, ready to send out a whole bunch of roses (even to those of you with a rose allergy. I have a thorny issue, though. The system doesn’t work! I am not able to enter a message on the first pop-up and get an ‘undefined error’ message as the second one. I have enough points, so that’s not the problem. I’ll try it again tonight when I am back in the UK on my computer.
