Loving the idea of watching lots of German Films and listening to German Music. very lyric based music would be great! Any ideas i would much appreciate it cheers!
I know everyone has a different taste in films so I would suggest doing some google searches on German films and what genres or themes you like. Some of my favorites are: Das Boot, Lola Rennt, and Downfall just to name a few films. You really have to go out and just start watching films that you may like.
On music…again it’s hard to say. I like German Rock and that is somewhat of a general statement because I can listen to almost anything that is “German Rock.” Just for a few bands in what I like are Oomph!, Rammstein, and Wir Sind Helden. My music tastes are all over the place. So I say just go out and experiment.
I like peter fox. This video is cool: Peter Fox - Alles Neu (official Video) - YouTube
Das Leben des Anderen was a great film.
Hier einige deutsche KĂĽnstler, die meines Wissens nach Wert auf Texte legen / Here are some German artist with meaningful texts:
Fettes Brot (Deutscher Hip-Hop)
Wir sind Helden (Pop)
Roger Cicero (Swing)
Annett Louisan (Schlager/Pop)
Die fantastischen Vier (Deutscher Hip-Hop)
Söhne Mannheims (Soul, R&B, Pop und Rock)
Xavier Naidoo (Soul, R&B)
Reinhard Mey (Chanson)
I like the following song:
Marlene Dietrich - Mutter, Hast Du Mir Vergeben? Marlene Dietrich - Mutter, Hast Du Mir Vergeben? - YouTube
Have you looked at Lieder? Classical music, lyric based. Marlene Dietrich is pure nostalgia, where have all the years gone?
There’s a song by Die Prinzen entitled and about Olli Kahn that is very funny, if you like football and can still remember Olli Kahn the legendary goalie:)
Also Die Toten Hosen, Die Aerzte, Herbert Groenemeyer.
Joan Baez - Sagt Mir Wo Die Blumen Sind Joan Baez - Sagt Mir Wo Die Blumen Sind - YouTube
Danke Schon, das ist sehr gut Informationen … trying to say thanks for the good information… checking it all out.
I know only Amerika by Rammstein the chorus is in english anyway it’s very fanny, german song. Here with lyrics - YouTube
The question was about “very lyric based music”. So some of the suggestions sound strange for me. Rammstein is popular but I wouldn’t call there songs “lyric”.
Herbert Groenemeyer has great songs but it is hard for me as a native speaker to understand the text.
Cosa Rosa (Rosa Precht), Spliff, Herwig Mitteregger!!!, and the first album of Nina Hagen.
Our family’s favourite old German film, Fritz Lang’s “M”, is apparently on YouTube:

I didn’t check it out, but hope it’s in German. Absolutely brilliant direction, a dark subject, many future stars in early roles.
The title of the thread immediately reminds me of Hoffmann von Fallersleben’s lyrics:
Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,
Deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang.
Anyway, you should definitely check out Jazz Pistols, a jazz-rock/fusion band from Germany:
Also of interest:
Kai Eckhardt—composer and bassist, known for his work with John McLaughlin, Vital Information, and Garaj Mahal.
Leni Stern—guitar player, wife of Mike Stern.
Till Brönner—trumpet player.
Now, here’s an interesting band, Stern-Combo Meißen (ostrock):

Then there’s Joachim Kühn, jazz pianist:
On my blog you’ll find some suggestions.

@ astamoore: interesting selection, thank you. Vera’s pages are also well worth looking at. Ja, ja, das Deutschlandlied, I knew it well… Not really, I’m even unsure about the third verse. There aren’t that many occasions when I would have to sing national anthems.
I like German rock songs too. That’s why I insisit in learning German too.

Hope all above is helpful.
