Followers + Stronger Social Features (Now That Following Is Fixed)

Hey LingQ team and community,

Thanks for fixing the Following list — being able to actually see who you follow from your profile is a clear improvement.

The social side of LingQ still feels incomplete, though. Right now you can see who you follow, but you still can’t see who follows you, and there’s almost no meaningful way to interact with other learners.

(:police_car_light: Yes, a private profile option should still exist. No one is trying to force public profiles or infringe on anyone’s privacy. The way Duolingo handles this works well: if your profile is private, no one can follow you, you can’t follow others, and your stats aren’t visible — but you’re still automatically entered into the monthly challenge.)

I’ve split the suggestions into two groups:

Short-Term / Most Requested

These feel like the most reasonable and high-demand improvements:

Proper Profile Page

  • Show both Following and Followers counts and lists
  • Make mutual follows easy to see

One Big Monthly Platform-Wide Challenge

  • A simple, automatic monthly challenge that everyone is enrolled in (e.g. maintain your streak for 29/31 days using the lowest coin option)
  • Keep the other challenges voluntary

Friend Streaks + Basic Profile Comparison

  • Let friends see each other’s friend streaks (up to 5 mutuals) and a simple weekly activity comparison for all users with a public profile (for example, total coins gained across all languages in the last 7 days)
  • Just a simple way to compare progress when viewing another user’s profile

Better Activity / Notifications Tab

  • A clearer notifications page showing follows, likes, friend milestones, and other social activity

Longer-Term / Wishlist

These would be nice but can reasonably come later:

  • A real social feed that prioritizes people you follow while still surfacing popular community content
  • Ability to easily share your own sentences or short updates
  • Gift / bonus system (sending small timed coin or XP boosts to friends)
  • Occasional Friends Quests / Challenges (1–2 per week)

The short-term items would already make the social side feel much more complete without requiring a full redesign.

Curious what others think, and whether any of this is already on the roadmap.

Personally I really love this idea. For me i get a lot of inspiration seeing the stats of other users.

Reaching out to people and making contact with like minded learners who might be a little bit ahead of you in know words etc, can be a great way to get advice on how to learn, what worked for them and what didn’t work, and general recommendations on content to check out and so on. As it stands now interacting with other users feels like a real shot in the dark would love more communal aspects for those that want to opt into that kind of thing.

Thank you for the feedback. We are planning on revamping the social features with the Cup of Languages being a first step towards that direction. We will take your feedback into account, lots of good ideas here.
