The quasi-criminal origin of Cockney rhyming slang is well known, but what about the Spanish “me llamo andana - I’m called a church”? I’ve read it comes from the right to asylum in any church and that these days you’d use it when you don’t want to comment on something. In Germany we used to say “mein Name ist Hase” i.e. I don’t know anything if we wanted to stay out of an argument. I don’t know whether this “Hase” stood for an innocent bunny rabbit or for an infamous Mr Hase. In any case, what has delighted or puzzled you recently?
“You might think that, I could not possibly comment” (Francis Urquhart)
A long time ago, I enjoyed listening to his outrageous remarks about himself and the people around him.
