Exported vocab lists come up as gibberesh

When I export vocabulary lists from Japanese or Chinese texts, the non-latin characters come up as gibberish once opened in Excel. Any ideas how I could fix this?
Here is text copied and pasted from a recently exported vocab list:
[[“en”, “当たる あたる\t1: to be hit; to strike; 2: to touch; to be in contact; to be affixed; 3: to be equivalent to; to be applicable; to apply to; 4: to be right on the money (of a prediction, criticism, etc.); 5: to be selected (in a lottery, etc.); to win; 6: t”]]

EDIT: Sorry for the annoying spelling mistake in the title of this post.

@ddw0 - Do you have the East Asian language pack installed? What happens if you try importing the vocab list into Google Docs or opening it in Wordpad, for example?
