“I’ve been thinking about starting to read a lot of books on paper.
However, I’d like to have a companion dictionary I can use on my iPhone. Maybe you’ve already tried some and found one that works well on iOS—either online or as an app. Ideally, something with minimal ads, good responsiveness, and a clean interface.
Just wondering if you have any recommendations for a good option. For now, I’m only focused on English. I might even consider going monolingual—who knows!
I have ChatGPT Plus already but it’s not the same thing as a dictionary experience. Imho. I don’t want a conversation. True that I could set up a bot just to deliver what I want though. Need to think about it.
It doesn’t deliver the same experience as a dictionary though, with all variants for each word, and so on. Just thinking out loud!
Yes, the dictionary is a completely different experience than a translation. It’s more immersive and professional. Imho.
An app would be convenient because it could be used offline too. Or maybe I could buy one dictionary on Kindle, and use the app where I can save all searched words.
You know you can just git it a prompt and it will only give you the Translation and explain the grammar in a very clear way right? and since you have Plus the results will be faster and more precise, you dont have to have a conversation with it, if you want i can give you a prompt for the language you are learning and the language you want for the translations.
I used Oxford Advanced English dictionary app on my iPhone. I found it quite good when I was reading textbooks during my university days. I used a free version. It worked great with minimal ads but you have to check it again. It has been quite a while that I used a dictionary app. I have simply switched to Grok/DeepSeek as it can provide examples in different context, so I can develop a deeper understanding of the word.
I will have to do some test with ChatGPT, but a professional dictionary is another experience. Both work well together though.
Maybe I can create my own specific bot after this mini brainstorm.
Word reference and Reverso are the two I use. I have had mistakes in both Chat gpt and Google translate and in an online course for learning Italian it was stressed to us to only use word reference .
Well, you know what? I did download the Wordreference app two days ago. I forgot they had one, and it was great to download it again. Same for Reverso. I use both of them too tbh. For now I do that, then I will see if I need more.
