In today’s video, I discuss how many languages I really know and what it truly means to know a language.
This video was very helpful to me. I’ll never be at Steve’s skill level, but I don’t consider him someone unique with “language powers he was born with”. He is just someone that devotes a huge amount of time to language learning, and has done so for many decades.
I have no interest in getting beyond a B2 level in any foreign language. Since I don’t travel, even that level is mostly input. I can’t afford tutors, even on Skype. De temps en temps, j’ecris un peu. But mostly, it is English.
Back in 1980-1995 the lack of free content was a big issue. It was bad enough that I finally stopped studying foreign languages. Around 2017 I realized that the world had changed. On the internet, there is a lot of free (or inexpensive) content. The amount increases every year.
For example, I can afford LingQ, so I use it when it helps me (like it does now, studying A1/A2 Turkish).
Bruh how have you been broke for that long
Retired. Fixed income. Living in California.
Oh ok fair enough. My bad for passing judgement
Hi gaoli. This is helpful to me. I am almost retired . Live in New England. Dabbled in languages over the years. Unable to travel abroad due to disability. I figure B2 also( learned French in school- my main language)- gone to Quebec. The only language worthwhile speaking for me would be Spanish in addition to French. Focus on reading and watching media in the others in the Romance and Germanic family.
