what is the difference between these two sentences?
- i went there.
- i did go there.
what is the difference between these two sentences?
āI did go thereā is more emphatic. Meaning that if someone said āI donāt think you went thereā you would say āI did go thereā to emphasize that the opposite of what they said is true. Whereas āI went thereā is not not as forceful.
Does that make sense?
thanks
thanks for your detailed information.
Nathan is quite right, I did go is the emphatic positive and so is used to answer a negative question:
I went to the park yesterday.
But didnāt you go to school?
Yes I did go to school! Then I went to the park after school.
giv another exampie plzzzz
I did try to do my homework, but the dog ate it.
I did try to ignore this thread, but I failed.
Hmm. Yet another interesting discussion.
I did go shopping, but I did not go to lunch.
I went shopping but I did not go to lunch.
Native speakers: Would you say these have different meanings?
One must use ādidā with ānot.ā You can not say āI not went.ā
Is there a name for that rule??
āI went shopping but I went not to lunch.ā
Hmm, nobody would ever say this, but is it actually wrong? I canāt make up my mind.
Helo.
Auxiliary verbs;
I went to a doctor yesterday. DID you?
Iāll make the dinner. Will you? Thatās awesome!
You wonāt forget, WILL YOU?
āI went not to lunchā is correct in Elizebethan English.
