If I can’t use the dictionaries on LingQ, I use the following:
For a “gisted” or “literal” translation, I use freetranslation.com. I will warn you, they have started using advertisements that talk at you, so beware of your computer’s sound if you go there while in a room with other people.
If you have an ok grasp of French you can also use the dictionary at tv5.org. TV5 is a television station in France that also broadcasts (via satellite) around the world. Click on “Langue française” on the left or go directly here: TV5MONDE - Langue française; you can put in a word in the box under the title “le dictionnaire multifonctions”. You will get a French definition, or change the drop down box below the search box to “Français-Anglais” for a translation.

It is necessary that they are in the Web and are free? Because the Portuguese dictionary hear is very bad, but the good ones that I know are in paper. I think there are electronic versions of them, but they are not free. If it doesn’t mind, a very good English-Portuguese dictionary is that by Antônio Houaiss, edited by Record, 2003; and the Cambridge Dictionary of American English for speakers of Portuguese is ideal, because it is a English-English dictionary with translations in Portuguese after givind the definition in English.
