Concerning language partners

I have a friend that lives in a Spanish speaking country. He is a very nice person and friendly. I am trying to learn Spanish (which is one of 4 languages that he speaks fluently) This should be a very convenient arrangement, but though I am a beginner in the language, he cannot help himself but to correct every single mistake that I make in the language. I have watched several of Steve’s videos and he seems to have the belief that grammar will come on its own in due time. Steve makes it clear that learning words is paramount.
I have asked my friend to stop critiquing everything that I say and to just respond to my statements as he understands them, but it is as though he can’t help himself…
It is obvious that my friend has had success learning languages, but he is not willing to let me achieve my first goal of “broken Spanish”
Has anyone had similar experiences to this?

My wife is like this. It’s just how some people are. Pay someone to talk to if you want control of how they act. That’s what I did.

maybe find a language partner that is looking to learn your native language. that way both sides gain from the conversation and you don’t have your friend correcting you.

There’s also the opposite problem. Sometimes I’ll say something but I’m unsure of myself, I’ll try to show my uncertainty hoping for a little help from the native. But if what I said is correct, the native doesn’t pick up on my uncertainty and I’m awkwardly left hanging lol.
